JUNK!!! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I agree completely with everything F1VJT stated in his review.
I will add that customer service is non existent. I purchased 4 of these for testing because, the GPS feature seemed like a good idea. Simple, no map, just coordinate, direction and distance to your fellow back-country traveler. Nope nada, I never was able to get the GPS to send and receive location info in any sort of reliable manner. Maybe as much as 10% success. And a General 25% failure rate of the hardware. One of the 4, right out of the box, had display issues. 4 months now and the display is completely dead. I have programmed in 144.390 and use it only for aprs. Rather expensive APRS rig.
In conclusion, if you want an HT that makes all the rest of your radios look good, this is is it. The very best bad example there is.

Junk transceiver! Good for the trash Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have purchased this transceiver two monts ago.
It is VERY BAD!
The receiver have somes big bugs: loudspeaker will close when squelch is programmed in "open" and RX signal have a DCS or CTCSS code...
Squelch hysteresis and sensivity are too high, it will a relatively big signal to open squelch when it is programmed to 1!
Software and transceiver have misterious functions not explained in the manual.
In TX mode it auto generated birdies between VHF and UHF (not harmonic frequencies)...
Sometimes, when squelch is code programmed, it will two seconds for ear sound on loudspeaker..
Channel encoder is erratic if turned normally (channel or frequency skip are totally random)... I'm forced to turn it very slowly to change VFO or memory channel properly.
Bargraph are useless: it go to full with a weak signal.
Battery will drop rapidly in only one day (no FM radio, no GPS and not intensive radio trafic).
Positive point: the GPS work properly...
It is a useless transceiver, the cheap Baofeng UV5-R work more better than 899-G.
If you want a dummy transceiver or an ornament for your shack, the 899-G is perfect but a little expensive!
