awesome radio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have no idea why no one ever did a review on this radio either. A review was done on it's big brother the TM2570a however this is the midrange version of the 25XX series of 2 meter radios back in the 1980's.
I bought this for pennies on the dollar and it is worth every cent. A very good receive section mated to a decent rf transistor section makes for a great rig.I have a Kenwood TM281 less than a year old and this 2550a hears a lot more from further away.A little adjusting of the radio was in order when I got it so now it is up to speed with RF out at minimal SWR. I can hear repeaters outside Philadelphia which is an easy 45 to 50 miles away. The overall build of the radio is old 80's style , no cheap plastic here .Solidly built top to bottom with tactile buttons on a non menu system. The display is nicely laid out and pleasant green background with color separated signal and rf meter below the frequency display.
The programming is deceptively simple and a newcomer to ham radio can have a repeater programmed into this in about 2 minutes.NO computer control on this radio so no worries about compatibility with various programs.Make sure you have a pl tone encoder in your rig as the kits may be hard to find.Overall ,this is a great radio for a beginner or a seasoned veteran.
