| My Kenwood TS890 is my Primary rig. I also have a Yaesu FTDX101D but find myself using the Kenwood more often. One of the features that I like is it's ability to limit the RF power on any band from the front panel. I run a solid state Acom amp, and only need 20W to drive it to full power. The receiver is excellent and with the MC90 desk Mic audio reports are always FB. Run my call to see the Station setup. 73........Lew |

I have spent several days now revisiting my xiegu G 90 and X6100. The G 90 is a big step up from the X 6100 however when I finally decided that I had revisited my two smaller radios I went back to my trusty TS-890S Kenwood tonight. My goodness, it’s like coming from outside in a blizzard of sleet and rain and freezing ice wearing nothing but your swimming trunks and then walking into one of the finest ritzy hotels in the world, wearing a tuxedo being waited on hand and foot and eating delicious meals. Listening to beautiful classic music and drinking good champagne with a beautiful woman. That’s what this Kenwood is like. It’s something dreams are made of. Every since I went into Ham Radio listening to all the radios and sweating for years and nights and days and months about how can you get something that sounds good. Well I have found it. This Kenwood is the cats meow.

Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. |
I’m not able to afford a 990, so a brand new 890s was my choice, it’s of the latest batch to come out of Kenwood’s factory in late 2022, and as far as I know, the receiver supposed to better than the 990 anyway (but there’s only one!).
I’ve always had Yaesu, but after my FTDX101MP had an issue after 2 weeks, I decided Kenwood was the only way to go..
I’m so glad I went for the Kenwood, great receiver, the build quality exceeded my expectations and it just looks more business like, less glitter.
I’ve plugged a Heil PR781 into it and the audio gets great reports. The VOX works great, I never use the PTT!
Since setting it up over the first week, I don’t have to go into any menu, everything is on the front panel.. such a great piece of kit. I don’t even touch the touchscreen.. It’s going to be a keeper… though I would love to add a 990 next to it…not instead of… as well as.
I love my 890! |

| Best transceiver I've ever owned |
Time Owned: 6 to 12 months. |
| Have gone through the YaeComWood phase. Decided on a Flex 6600. That was very dissapointing. I grew weary of having to wait 2 Minutes for it to boot up - and sometimes it didn't, and had to start over. The TS-890 has all the same features and boots in 4 Seconds. The bandscope is quite good and most of the controls are right up front. No complaints at all. I use it with an ACOM 700S with AT-04 tuner. |

| Yippee !! Love it ! Satisfied. |

I am thrilled with my TS-890 transceiver, which has been a joy to own and operate. It meets all of my demands and expectations. While I truly enjoyed a Ten-Tec Orion II and sever other radios, I sold them all with no regrets. All features work to specification and I have no complaints. Receive audio is very pleasant with no long-session fatigue as occurs with competing radios. Knobs, dials, and other controls feel luxurious and high quality. It comes with a fairly high price tag, and looks and feels worth the extra cost. Sometimes ya pay a little more for the luxury model and this is it.
This is a complex, customizable radio with an extensive MENU of features and optional settings. Sub-MENUs are logically arranged and displayed. Front panel controls are numerous and logically laid out. The most-used features are easy to access and adjust. The on-board spectrum/waterfall display is helpful and effective. While it is not as detailed as some SDR displays, it does the job and I no longer use an external SDR as a panadapter, simplifying station arrangement and operation.
Rear panel connections are intuitive and straightforward, facilitating data modes and external audio processing, including but not limited to recording QSOs or incoming data transmissions without fussy device drivers or external middle-man software. The USB, serial, and LAN ports work simultaneously, facilitating multiple computer logging and CAT control programs and station accessories. I spend less time futzing with my computer, and more time operating and making contacts.
The TS-890 has a very quiet and effective receiver. IF and pass-band filters are easy to manage. DSP-Noise Reduction is good, making weaker signals mixed with noise more intelligible. While not best in class, it is good enough. All DSP NR circuits degrade final audio quality and impose some deleterious digital artifact. The TS-890 DSP-NR circuit is overall quite effective and plenty good enough. Your mileage may vary. (I would never base my purchase decision this single feature.)
The free ARCP-890 control software is stable, helpful and easy to use, providing a quick, easy way to adjust MENU and other controls. Its spectrum scope/waterfall display works like a panadapter, quickly changing frequencies with a single mouse-click. It has an easy and straightforward method for adjusting IF and pass-band filter settings, with an obvious, clear display. While I prefer old fashioned front panel controls for most features and functions, the software provides an easy way to adjust and save many settings at once, and allows complete rig control over a serial, USB, or LAN port.
While competing rigs may have dual receivers, I do not feel limited in any way working split on a single receiver. I very rarely used the second receiver on my Orion II and I do not miss it now. Operating split is easy and works well.
The TS-890 is a fully featured, capable rig and prospective purchasers should be diligent and research carefully before finalizing a purchase decision. The TS-890 has established an excellent service record with no known issues, (at least not to my knowledge, and I read the TS-890 reflector every day, and owners do not clammor for firmware updates, as we often see with alternative products. It has worked right, as expected, right from the beginning.
My bottom line: It works as advertised and I am having more fun on the air, and enjoying great satisfaction with my station, since acquiring this radio. Of course this is just MY take ... your mileage may vary. 73 K8JHR

| I love this RIG |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
I have owned the TS-890 since 2021, before that I had a TS-590SG and an IC-7610.
The TS-890 is a fantastic device. Everything has already been mentioned in the previous posts, so I can't add anything new:
I love my TS-890. I don't think there will be a better transceiver on the market any time soon. |

The TS890 bests my Icom 7610 in most performance areas, as well as functionality (aside from a second rx), and is relatively easy to use once you've put some time in to getting familiarised and setting the many parameters in line with personal preference, along with amplifier keying etc. The only minor negative is the noise reduction, which as others have pointed out isn't quite as effective as it could be, and in the case of NR2 also generates some undesirable artefacts. On the plus side, the noise blankers are excellent and actually do a much better job of removing local PLI than the Icom at my QTH. As primarily a 10m & 6m user I'm really happy with the overall performance, and especially using wsjt modes, finding that the stability was rock solid and frequency accuracy within 1Hz at 50MHz (Wow!).
There's almost no need to feed a GPSDO derived 10MHz into the ref input....
As others note, on-air audio is pristine and with the right mic and some processing & eq it's quite easy to have a really standout signal - and verified by the almost endless positive reports I'm getting.
I've also ordered a ANAN 9700DLE MK2, so it will be interesting to see how that compares when it arrives in a month or two. And ditto when I soon connect a TR144H transverter for 2m operation.
With SC25 ramping up I'm really looking forward to being on the air with the 890 in the coming years, and I quite expect the 890 to be the go-to rig in the shack for many years to come.

| Best tranceiver I ever owned. |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I used the Kenwood TS-590S before and found it incredibly good.
However it was lacking a waterfall.
As this tranceiver is expensive I used an Icom 7300 and 7600 before.
Those are also very good but lack the exceptional filters the Kenwood has.
If you don't hear it with the Kenwood, nobody can hear it.
Yes it has a bit of a high price, but it's worth every penny.
It only lacks 1 option, that is that you can't record and playback over the air.
Not a real big problem, but one would expect such an option.
Other then that, can't beat the TS-890S, it's that good.
[Edit] My ATU died, it's a design fault that has been fixed since March 2022. Contact your dealer if your device is older, as the ATU will die over time due to a design problem. Get it fixed.
Kenwood knows about it, don't wait until it's too late to get it fixed for free. Even if you never use it, get it fixed, they know about it as they told us about it. Other then that, the radio is great and service of Kenwood quality. |

| Love this radio - feature rich & great sound! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I've owned many HF radios in my 20+ years as a HAM. I've had Yaesu, Icom & Kenwood. And, still have a couple for mobile and for portable operation / EmComm. This is my first radio in this price range. There are several features that stand out immediately. 1). The sound clarity is incredible. With all of the various filters and capabilities of this radio, I can actually hear stations that used to be in the noise. 2). The bandscope makes chasing DX a breeze! I'm able to see where stations are active on the band and even latent images of where stations have been recently! 3) Built-in sound card for digital modes is super easy to setup. You don't need any extra equipment! All you need is the proper CAT cable and a USB cable and you're in business. 4). I love the display! There are so many features on the display alone... a VU type meter for those of us that love analog meters... two time displays that you can choose which time zones... all the information you need is right there.
In short, this is a great radio. Yes, it's about three times the price of your economy HF multi-mode / multi-band rig. It's well worth the extra money if you're serious about your hobby!
