Good for new hams, few weaknesses Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This book is aimed at UK Novices, although it is useful for anyone getting started in building amateur radio transmitters. There is a companion book, *Practical Receivers for Beginners* also written by GW4HWR which ties together nicely.

It starts with some simple theory and very basic test tools that any amateur can build, a RF probe and absorption wavemeter. It moves into several HF projects. Then it moves into microwaves, with some more introductory theory and several projects in the 23cms and 3cms frequencies.

The transmitters range from 160m to 3cms (10GHz), and DSB (rather than SSB), CW, FM, Wideband FM, and ATV.

My biggest gripe about the book is the contents are already dated. Some components can no longer be found except by chance at ham flea-markets, and at least one project was based on hard to find bits when the book was written. This can be frustrating and a turn-off for a new ham, who is the target for this book.

It is not just a circuit cookbook, which I did appreciate, but a good book for the new ham who wants to expand on what s/he learnt studying for his/her license.

Retail price is £16.99 pounds in the UK.
