Description:
Have you just passed a ham radio exam? Congratulations!
Or are you coming back to the hobby after years away for a
career and family? Welcome back! The wonderful world of
amateur radio awaits you. You can dip your toe in to test
the waters or jump in the deep end of the pool. In any
event, there are many things to learn to be a successful
amateur radio operator. This book is designed to help you
achieve that goal. A successful operator is one who
knows how the equipment operates. For example,
understanding how a noise blanker works is critical to
using it effectively. Your operator’s manual will tell
you how to activate the noise blanker in your rig. This
book will help you understand how it operates and why it
works in some situations and doesn’t in others. A
successful operator is one who understands how radio
signals propagate from one place to another without the
benefit of an underlying $trillion infrastructure of cell
phone networks and the internet. This is the magical part
of ham radio. We will help you understand what it takes
to have an effective antenna to accomplish this and why
some antenna choices may be less than optimal. A
successful operator is one who knows how to be a good
neighbor on the amateur bands. Knowing what kind of
behavior is acceptable and what is not is part of being a
successful operator. We will touch on some of that
throughout the following chapters

Highly Recommended! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have been teaching Amateur Radio classes in Greer, South Carolina for a number of years (More info here: https://www.w4eey.com/index.html). We use the ARRL License Manuals, which are fine. But my students want more information about Operating, Antennas and Equipment. Until I learned about this book I didn't have a single resource to point them to.

This is a comprehensive handbook for Amateur Radio with up-to-date accurate information on a broad range of topics. The writing style is clear and understandable. The material is presented in such a way as to be understandable to new hams and valuable to the seasoned veteran.

This is now my "go to" book for my students. Take a look at their website and read the sample chapter. I think you will want this book on your tablet (PDF version) or on your bookshelf.

Kudos to Fred Cady and Vic DiCiccio for making this available. Great job!

Great resource for new hams and experienced hams Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
This is the book that gives you the information on how to be a ham once you've passed your license exam. Experienced hams will find some new things or learn a new way to explain things as you Elmer someone new to the hobby.

Over the past few years we've done a great job getting people licensed. All too often we don't follow through and actually teach them to be active functioning hams. This book is a great aid to help that task.

Well-explained, very practical information Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I ran across this book after previously using Fred Cady's Elecraft titles, and am very impressed. Currently I'm working through optimizing impedance matching on my antennas, and found the book's treatments of antennas, feed lines and tuners to be the most user-friendly of any sources I've been referencing. Flipping through it I also see very helpful treatment of other topics that I look forward to learning from. Excellent resource for me as a new ham licensed ~seven months ago.
