Really great with OpenGD77 firmware Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
While the stock firmware is clunky and lacking, I'm loving the OpenGD77 firmware. It takes a little reading to understand all of the capabilities, but I am thoroughly impressed!

I love the small size of this radio and I've had the UHF monoband for years. Now I can have a dual-band radio in the same size! Also, several of my local PD/FD operate above 480MHz. This radio can be programmed to receive these freqs.

Good value for money Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
These radios are not as amateur friendly as they could be, both from a user interface perspective and from a programming point of view. However, given the low cost, rugged build, clean transmitter, cheap accessories and audio quality, what is not to like?

Programming one of these from scratch, using the TYT software, is fairly straightforward and in my opinion, a much better bet than trying to alter one of the many codeplugs around on the internet. There are one or two annoying features, such as not being able to initiate a Private Call if you tick the box marked "Private Call Confirmed" on the talkgroup channels... But once you find these out you remember the settings.

Good points:
Very low cost, similar price from a ham dealer, to eBay MD380 prices
Excellent audio quality on DMR.
Caters for both 12.5KHz and 25KHz bandwidth on analogue.
You can set channels for RX only, handy if you listen to commercial users.
Rugged construction.
Clean transmit spectrum.
Quick to read/program
Free programming software and usually included with the radio, as is a programming lead.

Bad points:
The colour display, when the backlight goes off you have a black screen. There is no value in using a colour screen, a mono screen that is readable without a backlight would have been a lot more use.
No auto power off, if you leave the radio on a quiet talkgroup the display blanks after 15 seconds and you are liable to forget to turn it off.
The battery charger takes ages to charge the battery.
The minimum power setting (L) is 1 Watt, if you go into the alignment menu (read radio, press T on the computer keyboard, use with care), you can set the low power down to around 100mW, better for hotspot use.

i own 6 tyt ht's i thought this would be the best of both worlds but the radio has a few issues that need to be addressed i love the size their is some aftermarket software that helps alot but the two big issues i have are as follows 1 if you use the dtmf pad to send dtmf tones and unkey the receive don't return until you key and unkey again by that time you miss a repeater's response 2 the last two ht'si ordered will not take any vhf freqs lower than 150 mhz i am sending them back to r&l they are great ,, these radios lack usa support no place to call for support ya get what you pay for with tyt radios
