I've given it a 4 (I'd like a 4.5) as they are a great match for the TS-990.
I have two with one on the second receiver which is a boon if you're listening for a particular station while tuning around.
Why the lower score, well simply due to the cost and having a slightly tinny sound but only to be expected really well they are made from metal after-all!
Luckily I have a wife who loves quilting so a bit of stolen wadding takes care of the tinniness but I think they are over-priced however if you want the matching speaker that's what the cost is!

Im not sure what occurred on the negative review. Maybe it was a defect. The SP-990 is the same quality as all external speakers. It is just a speaker. It is like all the rest of the external speakers out there. I actually have two of the SP-990s. I purchased one used and tried it. I liked it so well I purchased another new one. (could not find another used one). Its perfect for dual receive. It separates the two signals. The internal speaker on the 990 is very high quality as well. I just like the forward firing speaker and I like to separate the dual receive signals by a little distance on the desk.

$290 for this steel can? Resonating, colouring the sound. A few foam stickers 1" wide inside as for damping material. Small 4" speaker to fit a 6" high box. We'd expect better quality from Kenwood. We'd expect better quality for this price. Maybe even half that price. Prepare to buy Phonema's kits for an additional $42 (speaker) + $67 (foam) to get a decent speaker that fits the flagship. Told you: a steal.

Have had the TS990s for 3+ years an love this radio, but when I first brought the radio, I could find only one review for the Kenwood SP990 speaker, the reviewer did not like the speaker, I on the other hand think its a Great speaker an enhance's the audio of the TS990s, for about 18 months been using a Yaesu SP8 external Speaker with the TS990s. The SP990 speaker bring out the sound better with less background noise, which it was made to do for that purpose. Talked to a AU Ham that has the SP990 speaker an he said get one you will love it, I did, he was right on, a marked improvement ..........73s .........kb6hrt
