works but Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought this mast and tripod to work with an antenna that sets up in a dipole configuration as a v. The top extension pole is useless for my using as it will try to bend over in the wind. Too small a diameter for what I hang on it. I have problems trying to extend the tripod all the way up as it always seems to bind as I start to raise it. The paint on the tripod is poor. A piece of tape will remove all paint in a second. I highly recommend buying the MFJ 1905 anchor foot braces or making your own, and anchoring the tripod to the ground. I use 8 inch lag bolts pounded into the ground. The wind was blowing 40 mph the other day and the antenna stayed in the air, the mast was really bending in the breeze. It does support the antenna on the next pipe down from the top and gives me a base height of about 15 feet above ground. I am disappointed I couldn't use the top pipe on the mast for my project. So all in all because of the wind was blowing so hard and the antenna staying in the air I will give it a 4.

Solid portable fiberglass mast with a heavy duty tripod base. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have this same tripod with a telescoping metal 7.8 foot mast for use with a portable vertical antenna. This version has the same metal tripod base and comes with a 15 foot fiberglass push up mast with quick clamps instead of a push up metal mast. This mast is very useful for wire antennas.

The mast is quite sturdy even when fully extended. The tripod legs are large enough to place sandbags over the legs for extra stability if needed. I simply added a screw clamp to the top of the mast and attached a quick release snap. I tested this with a roll up J Pole and a dual band linked dipole in an inverted V configuration with good results. I left this mast out in the rain overnight and was able to air dry the mast indoors the next day. The base is made of steel and could rust with repeated exposure to rain.

My only complaint is that the fiberglass mast was glued to the metal tripod and this glue did not hold. I was able to use Gorilla Super Glue GEL over the existing glue with a solid bond.

If you want a reliable method to suspend a wire antenna to 18 feet this tripod mast will get the job done.

Another, lighter travel option is a guyed push up fiberglass travel mast. Be aware that some of these guyed travel mast are NOT rated for use with a wire dipole above 20 feet. Some can hold a roll up J Pole at about 30 feet however.
