Excellent Repeater Antenna Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Don't be surprised if you haven't heard of Bruce Childs of Childs Antenna Company. I hadn't heard of him either, until I began searching for an omni-directional, heavy-duty base station antenna for 220 MHz. I needed something extremely reliable, as it would be installed on a tower that has limited access. It needed to duplex well (repeater use), and I needed some gain, at least, something more than a 1/4 wave or 1/2 wave unity gain.

I found Childs Antenna while searching around on the web looking for this. The model I got is a BASE-230, which is a 3 dBd gain omni cut for 224 MHz (he will center cut for your frequency). He makes antennas all the way down to 25 MHz. His popular models cover 2 meters, 440 MHz, 220 MHz, etc.

I had the antenna installed at 275 feet recently on our 224.38 repeater here in Eastern NC. It works extremely well and within reasonable expectations considering the modest power level we are running and the height the antenna is installed at. The antenna can come with your choice of connector and cable length out the bottom mast pipe.

The antenna base is 1.5" and the fiberglass diameter is 1.25". The thickness is 1/8". This is phenomenol for the price he charges. I am extremely satisfied and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this antenna to anyone who desires a strong, medium gain base whose main objective is dependability. I wish I had heard of him earlier. I would have probably gone this route instead of either over-killing with $1000 antennas or going cheap with the flimsey Diamond or Comet sticks.
