almost like cheating... Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just as with their HTs, Motorolas have a mystique (attitude?), and a reputation as not being a "ham-friendly" radio. Yes, they are expensive. Yes, there are Chinese radios that have more features and cost way less. Yes, you pay extra for things and genuine Moto accessories tend to not be cheap (though aftermarket stuff does work well depending on the details).

So why suffer the slings and arrows of Motorola ownership? Performance. The radio is build like a tank, tx and rx performance is the best out there, DMR performance is incredibly stable, and it just works. It also has a surprising number of features - it has Bluetooth 4.0, you can get it with built-in WiFi, it does text messaging, etc.

If you want easy-to-access features and need 200K contacts, etc, then the 5550e isn't your radio. If you want a radio that will last, perform above and beyond expectations, and is stable on DMR, this should be in the decision matrix. I run it as a base station and it is like cheating getting into any number of local repeaters. Next step is benchmarking some DMR simplex.
