Made a HUGE improvement to the SP-890 Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
To start, I have a large collection of radios, mostly newer and have the OEM matching speakers. To MY ears, they are mostly empty metal boxes. IMHO, they all needed help. I have used Phonema Acoustic packing and speakers with mixed results, as have others.
I really, REALLY enjoy my TS-890. I had been using it with a Kenwood KES-5 (mobile speaker) which has LOTS of volume and treble. I also can switch to a Palstar SP-30B which has the opposite response. Muted volume and lots of bass. I have seen positive comments about the Kenwood SP-890 on the 890-Groups.io Site, so I though I'd get one, despite the price.
My initial results were VERY disappointing for a $200+ speaker. I gave it a '3' rating here. The speaker had a rattle at higher volumes.

I purchased the Phonema Acoustic kit for the SP-890. I was surprised by the size (and weight!) of the box.
When I opened the SP-890 it was exactly as expected, a big, empty, metal box.
The Phonema kit consists of 6 pieces. 4 of these are a firm foam attached to a thick, rubber shield.
The fit was perfect. Getting the cover back on was a bit of a chore, since you are compressing some of the material. It made the 'improved' speaker quite heavy.
The improvement was very noticeable. No more rattle.
Doing A=B tests with the Palstar, produced virtually the same results.
Why can't I still give the SP-890 a '5'? Just because the Palstar was NIB, $70 and free shipping. To have it 'almost' as good as the now almost $300 Kenwood is pretty troubling.
