Large, comfortable, open-back, replaceable ear pads Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
My old Yamaha CM-500 boom headset was beginning to show its age. It had sat dormant for four (4) years and when I attempted to use them, the material on the ear pads was cracking and left considerable residue on my head, clothes, and desk. I thought I could replace the pads but discovered it was not possible. Then the microphone died. I was now in the market for a new headset. I first checked out the Heil PRO-7 and the Inrad W1 units and the $200.00 price tags. My XYL squelched that idea by reminding me of the $5K I am about to spend for the new tower installation and the fact that I already own several microphones (mostly Heil). I decided an inexpensive set of headphones would fill the bill. An added benefit would enable me to be able to drink coffee, other beverages, or water without having to move the boom on a headset. After reading a lot of reviews, I discovered the Spadger CD990, with easy-to-replace ear pads, and gave it a shot. The set arrived in a box, had its own carrying case, and a spare set of ear pads. I plugged the detachable cord into the headphones and then into my Yaesu FTDX-5000MP. They are very large in size but are "open-back" (I can still hear my XYL call me, a definite life-saver). They feel very good and fit my large melon head. I selected the second receiver, so that I could listen to two different frequencies simultaneously, and everything worked well. I also tried them on my Yaesu FT-1000D and lastly on my Icom IC-775DSP. I have been using them for over a month and really like them. IMHO, they rock.
