Icom IC-740 repair Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Saw reviews so I contacted Charles. He kept me informed of his progress continuously. Besides the main problem, he recommended additional items to bring radio to better working condition. Very professional operation. When I received the radio back, he included bags of old parts with information printed on the bag as to the parts replaced. Also printed review of my radio and a log sheet of contacts he made with the radio when complete. Just recommend to consider the cost to ship and return shipping as this is not in the quote for repairs. Cost me over 100.00 for total shipping costs with insurance besides cost for the repair. Do contact Charles before going elsewhere (AJ4UY)

My Kenwood R-5000 developed intermittent problems. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
My Kenwood R-5000 receiver developed an intermittent receive problem. I contacted AJ4UY, Charles Ferry, Jr. and he told me to get it to him and he would diagnose the problem and attempt to fix it. I did just that. In less than 30 days Charles had my problem fixed, and receiver back to me. It's now playing like a new one again.
Charles is an excellent person to work with. He keeps you informed of his progress and is a great technician. I would not hesitate to use his services again.

My IC-703 developed an intermittent receiver Time Owned: more than 12 months.
My IC-703 developed an intermittent receive function. Charles Ferry took his time and returned the unit fully operational-- just like when it was new. His charge for the repair was very reasonable and if this unit or my IC-706 develop a problem in the future I will send it to him for repair.

Outstanding repair job on my ailing Kenwood TS-480HX! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I picked up a nice Kenwood TS-480HX (the 200W model). It worked fine initially, but after trying to add a third party TCXO, the radio's 200W output dropped to 20W, and other functions no longer worked correctly. A quick email exchange with Charles AJ4UY, and I shipped the radio to him for repair. He was confident he could diagnose and correct the trouble. If I could give him 7 or 8 stars, I would. Every step of the way, he would email me an update of what he found, and what step he would take next, typically every couple of days. During this time many parts suppliers had problems, but Charles was able to secure the parts in a relatively short time. He went above and beyond, and wound up charging an extremely reasonable amount for his effort. Because of his excellent communication, it put my mind at ease along the way, unlike some repair services where you wonder what is going on because they are not updating you. When I received the radio back, it not only worked 100%, but it had a nice printout with all of the itemized problems that he corrected. I would not hesitate to recommend Charles to repair any of the vintage Kenwood radios.

Problem with my Icom 7410 Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Suddenly one day my Icom 7410 wouldn't tune on 80m but would on 20m and higher frequencies. I told a fellow ham, WB4KFO that I was having this problem with my Icom 7410 and he mentioned that he had seen something on eHam about another ham having the same problem with a Yaesu transceiver. He had the problem fixed by Charles ,AJ4UY. After calling Charles he agreed to trying to fix my 7410. After testing it for several weeks he slowly got the 7410 to tune up on the 80m band. I don't know how he did it but I didn't want to pressure him on the issue. I so glad to get my faithful old receiver working again. When I opened the very carefully packed receiver there was a copy of his voluminous testing results. This is something I wouldn't expect to get from any manufacturer. I couldn't be happier with Charles work and willingness to help me. Dave, K44SV.

Does great work! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I sent my Drake R8 off to be trouble shot for a major problem. Charles was able to diagnose the problem and replace the components in short order.

My radio came returned very well packed, along with an extensive summary and logging of tests across different bands. And most importantly, a fully functioning radio.

Would absolutely recommend!

If it not Broken Charles will check it and tell you. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
“My ICOM IC –706 MKIIG was getting old, so was I. The ICOM company is not particularly interested in fixing one so old. I did what any loyal ham would do, turn to QST. As expected I found what I was looking for, another ham with business to repair a variety of electronic equipment. That is AJ4UY ,Charles Ferry.
I sent him an Email explaining my needs. His response explained he was back loaded by about three weeks and provide an address, and suggested I ship it via post office in about two weeks. He also mentioned he had worked on similar ICOM's and had a schematic for the 706 MKIIG to work with. The repair project was underway.
Once Charles began working on my transceiver he gave me almost a day by day set of repairs on my old faithful. After he identified problems and repair them he went through a series of tests using equipment that many of us have heard of, equipment with high accuracy and sensitivity. For the engineers you will appreciate the degree of testing. The rest of the amateur radio world you want to make it work, so does Charles. Once he was satisfied Charles went on the air and provided me with copies of the log pages.
By now you're interested in wondering how expensive this can be. My experience with manufacturers offering you to mail your radio to them and they will analyze your problems for between $95 and $150. If you decide to have them repair it the cost will go up very quickly. Not the case with Charles. I was very satisfied with the work and very happy to the reasonable repair costs.”
