Good portable, but not great. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I was actually looking for a cheap portable radio that featured a fixed LINE OUT for monitoring off-air audio levels, and came across this portable on a clearance back in 2007. I believe that I paid no more than $50.00 for it, and don't even remember where I'd gotten this from. It came with a wasted, warped speaker, where anything out of it is nothing but distortion, but the headphones is a pleasant surprise and sound very good, especially in AM Wide mode. There's actually ample enough power from the headphones OUT to power an EXT speaker, and that sounds quite nice. LINE OUT fixed audio is a nice feature to have, and I utilize that. Reception??? Not bad. MW AM would rate possibly a *** out of ***** from a Radio Jay Allen Review. SW is sensitive enough to hear AM HAM's on 3885kHz and 7295kHz. Also can RX WWV at 15MHz well underground in my basement, even in LOCAL mode. It does have a 3.5mm ANT IN, albeit I have not tried that, yet. Inside, the radio is in two halves. The radio-side is actually through-hole tech, so repairable. The front side, for memory and LCD screen, is all SMT tech. Supposedly, it charges NiMH batteries, but not fully. Battery use is best with alkaline AA batteries. The wallwart power supply is nice, with no switching PS hash. Direct keypad entry is nice as well. Complaints, besides getting a bad speaker with this radio? No SSB and coverage doesn't go all the way to 30MHz, so miss out on CB'ers and 10M AM. The Tone button is TALK / MUSIC, instead of HIGH / LOW, but works. Antennas include 30" telescopic whip for HF and FM, and a 4" bar for AM. All in all, a cute portable. So, if you see this for under $50.00, it's worth it.
