Alternative to more expensive studio mics Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I found this a very solid, well-made mic with a unique frequency response. According to KAM, the RT1 "Ribbon Tone" dynamic moving coil mic was designed to reproduce the smooth sound of vintage ribbon microphones, so you'll get a bit more emphasis on low and midrange than other professional XLR utility mics like the Shure SM-58 or Audio Technica ATM series. For ham radio use, you'll need to boost the highs +5db or so, easily done with the tone controls found in most modern transceivers or outboard mixers. I appreciate the studio mic fidelity in the form factor of a smaller mic. It's a good alternative to shock-mounting, suspending and phantom-powering a big, heavy studio condenser mic. For those into AM, hifi or voodoo SSB, you need not spend $400 to $700 on a large diaphragm dynamic mic like the Shure SM-7B or EV RE-27 when you can find this little gem on auction sites for less than $50.
