Review Summary For : Heil Sound PR-37
Reviews: 1MSRP: $269
Description:
The PR 37 is designed for live sound reinforcement and recording applications with the vocalist in mind. As the next step in the evolution of Heil Sound’s family of vocal microphones including the PR 35 and PR 22, the PR 37 delivers an ultra-clear and transparent sound that brilliantly cuts through any mix. The PR 37’s frequency response features smooth, low mids, and an enhanced upper mids presence that allows vocals of all kinds to effortlessly shine through. The PR 37 provides -40 dB of rear noise rejection, making it perfect for live applications, particularly in situations with high stage volume. The large-diameter (1.5”) dynamic element of the PR 37 is housed in a stable mounting system that is designed to reduce handling noise. The rugged metal body of the PR 37 is designed to provide durable protection for the microphone, making it the quintessential workhorse microphone for live use, while still providing superior sound quality that is characteristic of Heil microphones.

Broad response, smooth mid-range and presence peak Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is a traditional stage vocal mic in design, with a larger body than a typical SM-58 or similar design. This could be a nice alternative for those who want a lower profile appearance compared to the large shock mount style of microphones or who may use it as a stage/vocal microphone.

I compared this microphone with the PR-35, an Audix OM2 and a Shure Beta 87a that I had on hand here.

I found this microphone to have a very nice broad response. The bottom end has some solid energy to it down low a bit under 100Hz, particularly when worked close to the element. The mids are smooth and fairly flat with no exaggeration to them, less "honky" at 900Hz than a lot of mics. There is a nice presence rise as well that I found to be smoother and less gritty than say the Beta 87a or an MD-421.

This microphone handles plosives more effectively than the PR-35 and has reduced handling rumble as well. As with most dynamics it has some proximity effect but it is not exaggerated and is easily managed and can be useful as a tool for emphasis. It can be run naked with a bit of mic technique and a quality foam wind screen would go a long way as a final touch for those without great mic technique.

I found the mic to have very good off axis rejection and yet has a comfortable "bubble" to work in so it isn't so tight a pattern that any head movement loses the level.

I found this mic to have a similar response to my PR-30, with possibly a bit brighter top end to it. I like the bottom end of both of these mics, they are both less of a struggle to get cleaned up for radio use.

The construction quality is very solid, even the mic clip is very well done as is typical with the Heil Sound mics. It should hold up to stage abuse quite nicely.

The output level of this mic is quite high as well for a dynamic so it is very easy to get a solid level with a basic pre-amp. I tested with outboard processing gear but I believe this should work straight into a modern rig as well.

I would say this mic sounds its best when worked fairly close, 2-3" on center to the element. This will also be the best mode for reducing background noise as well.

If you want the look and lower profile of a vocal mic vs the cage style shock mount of a PR-30, this one is definitely worth a look and sonically a close cousin.

This mic was provided to me for evaluation.
