Review Summary For : BHI Dual In-Line Noise Cancelling Unit
Reviews: 2MSRP: 190 Euro
Description:
The bhi Dual In-Line DSP noise eliminating module provides two channel/stereo noise cancellation, and is suitable for use on all radios and receivers including SDR, especially those with stereo or two channel output options. It can also be used with mono speaker input and output signals providing up to 7 watts audio when a mono speaker is connected. The bhi Dual In-Line module incorporates their latest dual channel/stereo DSP noise cancelling technology, which has an improved noise cancelling algorithm that brings even better quality audio to the listener when operating in very noisy conditions. The processed speech is clearer and more intelligible as a result and makes your listening experience so much better. The module caters for both high and medium level mono and stereo audio input signals, and has stereo line out, stereo headphone and mono speaker output sockets. You can listen with headphones and a mono speaker at the same time, and you can also connect a pair of stereo computer speakers to the line output socket allowing you to monitor two separate channels at the same time. This feature is ideal for DXing, club stations, training, special event stations and field day events

Good DSP noise suppression Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Designed for voice signal enhancement, the bhi Dual-in-line Noise Elimination module has all the necessary options for audio input from your rig, and output options for driving a speaker (7W), or line output for any other audio device.
As long as you have 12V DC available to power it, hooking it up is fairly easy. I had to crimp on power pole connectors to the provided DC power cable, to plug into a spare pair of power pole sockets. The audio input & output cables are provided.
I connected it to my Icom 7300 and an external speaker.
On SSB, I found its DSP better than the Icom's NR at dramatically lowering background noise level while preserving much of the original signal.
The Icom's NR tends to suppress the higher freq components of voice a signal compared to the bhi's DSP.
The bhi DSP definitely makes listening to SSB voice signals with a noisy background far more comfortable.
You need to get used to the big drop, about 3x, in audio volume when you engage the DSP; you need to crank up the radio volume to compensate.
I never used more that step 3 of DSP. Above step 3, voices began to sound like they were being spoken through a gurgling pipe, fairly un-natural.
I would prefer a less dramatic range of DSP steps, starting off very light, and then progressing up to the current level5 in effect.
I was hoping for dramatic increase in digging out weak SSB voice signals buried in the noise, but was disappointed. When the signal is no stronger that the noise, there can be a slight improvement in intelligibility, but it's only marginal.
If you can hear a voice buried in the noise, but cannot make out a single word, you might be able to slightly increase the intelligibility, but only marginally.
Sometimes I used up to level 2 of the Icom's NR with level 2 of the bhi DSP to dig out a word or two, but most of the signal remained buried.
Overall I'm impressed by the ability of this bhi device to suppress background noise, but the signal needs to be above the noise to really make this happen.

Excellent DSP Product Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I was searching many years for an audio DSP system for my Yaesu FT-897D. I wanted to eliminate the background noise and make HF band listening more pleasant. I have to say that i was very skeptical and hesitant in buying this product. I put it in the basket many times but I was afraid to press the "pay" button....

Reading many reviews, i was persuaded that the product should be at least be good. Finally one day i pressed the button and in 2 weeks i had it in my hands.

Very easy to connect it to my Rig and BOOOOOOOOOOM !!! I was Impressed!!!

I didn't expect to see such a HUGE difference.
Now the HF band is very pleasant, as the background noise is almost eliminated.

It is the first time I say that I enjoy HF Bands listening.
I usually keep it in level 4 or 5.

If there are some strong stations i put it at level 8 and have almost FM quality with no noise at all.

Needless to say that i can not imagine my Rig without this device.

Even in the very low signals you do not loose any quality. I have checked many times by turning off the DSP, but except more noise i do not listen clearer. So distortion is not an issue.

Also, Quality and Ergonomics are at high level!!!

I write this review to help others. Yes, it is kind of expensive device but for sure you get what you paid for.
