Review Summary For : OptiBeam OBLY16-5 (16 Element Log Yagi 20-17-15-12-10m)
Reviews: 2MSRP: 1.814,00 EURO + Shipping
Description:
The OBLY16-5 is a Log Yagi, not a logarithmic periodic antenna. It consists of 15 driven elements, which are 180 degrees out of phase between each other, and a parasitic director which mainly acts on the 24 up to 28 MHZ range. In contrary to a logP the 15 driven elements do not follow a mathematical logarithm, this counts for their percentage difference in length as well as for their distance between each other, i.e. every single element is tuned for maximum performance, based on an iterative process. Due to the big active region of the antenna per band (capture area) the practical performance can be compared to at least five individual optimized three element monoband Yagis. But while monoband Yagis are somewhat peaky (not stable) regarding gain and pattern across the desired frequency range and show not a really flat SWR the OBLY16-5 shows absolutely solid gain and a very high f/b ratio across all bands with a very low SWR.

Just perfect ! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
The kit arrived well packed, in strong carton boxes, and on the day as planned. All parts are numbered, everything that can be pre assembled is so and every single detail is taken care of. Eg : bolts with nylon inserts are widely used in the construction : all of them are screwed just enough to avoid accidental unscrewing but also not too much so you don’t waste time turning them unnecessarily; it is a small thing but it shows the strive for perfection Tom DF2BO is looking for. Assembly is a real pleasure and when completed, the antenna looks perfect : all elements well aligned, strong design, made for lasting. As soon as the antenna is on the 15M high tower, it is also electrically perfect: SWR low and constant on a very wide bandwidth. Not a single tuning or adjustment needed, result is just perfect.
Visually, the form factor of the OBLY is beautiful and elegant.

This is my 2nd optibeam antenna, I also have the wonderful OB12-4W on another 20m high tower.

After 6 months of use, I cannot make a real difference in performance between the two antennas (on bands they have in common : 20, 17 and 15m), they are within one s-point of each other, once for the OB12-4W, once for the OBLY, with no discernable pattern. The most noticeable difference is the incredible F/B ratio of the OBLY which totally kills QRM when it’s from its back.

Add to that Tom’s friendliness and quickness to handle any of your question or inquiry (even when he’s on holidays!!) and you get an antenna that you will never regret.

Excellent performance and solid robust design Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Just installed my new Optibeam 16 element log yagi
and all went very smoothly. packing, instructions, assembly and immediate factory response to a few minor questions. The proof is in its excellent performance however which was confirmed with my very first QSO and many thereafter over the past few days.

If you only want to climb your tower once and have a design that performs well over the entire 20-10m range this Log Yagi is the way to go. No compromise in this design.
