Review Summary For : Yaesu M-90D Desktop Microphone
Reviews: 4MSRP: $174.95
Description:
The M-90D utilizes a Dynamic Microphone Element that is finely tuned to deliver rich low to mid frequency response desirable for a clear and concise conversation. Using a windscreen cover and a directional micophone element, the structure of the microphone of the M-90D and M-90MS is designed to concentrate voice input from the front while reducing ambient noise from the side. Built-in Low-Cut filter creates clear and crisp audio characteristics by shaping the low frequency response (cut off at 340Hz, -6dB/octave). An Isolation Transformer is integrated in the circuit board in order to enhance the audio quality. The M-90D is compatible with all YAESU HF transceivers equipped with the round 8-pin microphone connector or the 8-pin modular microphone connector. The PTT of the M-90D uses three Air-Cylinder tubes similar to the Reference Microphone M-1. This provides solid and smooth extended operation. A simple one touch PTT keylock button is placed directly above thePTT key for those long rag chews.

Great mic for the FTDX101, Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
OK, i agree with the other reviewers on most things. This is a well made economically reaspmable mic. that sounds great on my FTDX101MP. Eq is easy, just take out some of the low bass and boost the highs a bit. Its lass efficient than the MD100A8X but not much. Good balanced audio by all reports and punchy with the AMC/Comp set appropriately. The pop filter is easy to remove for cleaning too.

Decent mic for what it cost. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I decided to purchase this mic on a whim as an alternative to the much more expensive desk mics that Yaesu is offering since I really can't justify spending $500 or more just for a mic. Couldn't really find much info other than a couple of reviews here on eHam. The main thing I wanted to know besides audio characteristics was the build quality but couldn't find any information about it. As expected, it's a pretty light weight microphone without much weight to it but it is sufficient. It's not going to tip over easy and feels pretty well balanced. It is not top heavy, so it is easy to hold in your hand without wanting to topple if you are accustomed to picking it up while talking. It is pretty much all plastic construction from top to bottom except for maybe the plate on the underside of the desk stand. However, that does not mean that the quality is bad. Sure, I would have liked to have seen a little more substantial material used in some places but for under $200, I really can't complain. It is pretty much what I was expecting it to be and does what I purchased it to do. Audio is clean and the mic seems to do a good job of not picking up extra background noise. I'm no audio expert but if you have a modern rig with eq settings you will be able to tailor it for some really good audio and it would probably sound fine even without any eq. It is a well-made mic to be mostly plastic and I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one if I needed it.

Good replacement for the MD-100 Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The reviewer said the Foam does not come off, The foam comes right off easily and can be cleaned and or replaced. It is not Glued down.

The M90D has more of a full sound over the M70D. Both are close and sound close to the same.

This mic has to much bass. Set Mic EQ to pull 200 HZ by 10 DB. Cut 700HZ by 7DB Boost 2700 by 10 DB. Set Mic EQ Q at 1. This mic will still sound very full and also be clear. Don't use the Low cut switch under the mic. Use the EQ on the rig.

Good desktop microphone for the money Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
With the stock MH-31 hand mic I never felt that the parametric equalizer that comes with the rig was all that effective. When using the M-90D microphone I don't feel like I have this problem any longer.

Mindful of the fact that we only have about 3KHz of bandwidth to play with here, and using WebSDR to monitor the audio, I found that the parametric equalizer could much more effectively implement the characteristics of this microphone and bring out a much more effective and better sounding audio quality.

The construction is sound and it doesn't feel 'cheap', but doesn't have the same 'heavy' feel like the MD-100. The PTT button has a soft, squishy, and extremely quiet feel to it. It's also made of plastic. There is no feedback from the PTT button, so you don't know if you've actually keyed up until you see the red TX light or hear the amp relay click.

Compared to the MD-100 (which I really like), it picks up a lot less ambient noise, so others don't hear my stupid dog barking in the background as much.

The foam windscreen doesn't appear to come off of this mic, so if you have a dusty shack, be prepared to brush the dust out--can't remove and rinse it.

The M-90D microphone doesn't have all the bells and whistles like the MD-100. There's no button on the M-90D to change frequency, and it doesn't have all the filtering that comes with the MD-100--only a Low-Cut switch with one setting. But one can make up for that if the rig has a parametric equalizer for TX audio.

Great audio is achievable with the M-90D. But because of the non-removable foam windscreen and the feel of the plastic PTT button I'm giving this mic a "Good" rating as opposed to "Great".
