a GREAT KEEPER GEM Time Owned: more than 12 months.
It has the quieter receiver of all my QRP portable radios, among , ten tecs, yaesu ft817, icom 703, fx-4a, mfj monobander.
the TJ5A it is a great self contained hf radio, rugged, great TX audio and reliable communication audio on receive.

very rare raDIO in these days because it is discontinued (sadly).

if you find one on 200 ish dollar range, go get it.

you wont regret it.

Nice little QRP rig Time Owned: more than 12 months.
It appears there was no review of this rig so I decided to add one.

This is considered a QRP rig even though it maxes out at 20w. It’s a nice little rig although it has its flaws. The first appears to be no on board battery, it can be ordered as an option and they do provide a 12v cable with it.

The second is the speaker, not very loud but it does offer a headphone port which takes care of the issue. It runs on a standard jack so any headphones will work with it and it gets LOUD.

Third is the mic, reports out of the box say it’s tinny and muffled. The mic feels like a cheap Baofeng so I did the Baofeng mod to mine of drilling out the mic porthole which fixed the issue.

The good:

It tunes up very easily and has a tune mode built in.

Operates from 1-20w but seldom needs to be above 10w to be effective. I stay between 5-8w with good success, and have worked down to 2w successfully.

Very easy on battery, a 20ah battery will give you many sessions in the field without a recharge.

Multiple modes and tuning steps.

Overall not a terrible rig, in fact an excellent starter for anyone trying to break into to QRP work. I’ve worked in excess of 500 miles with mine at 5w or less with a simple wire dipole with consistent 5/5-5/9 reports.

One could reasonably pick one up used in the $150-200 range and have a great QRP unit for those on a budget. It’s not an Icom IC-705 or an Elecraft KX3 but then again it’s not $1200 either.
