NVIS low height linearly loaded dual band for 80 and 40. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I live on a city lot in the old part of Hamilton, ON. My backyard is deep but narrow. I've been using a Butternut HF6V vertical that has been great for the long hauls and close ground wave but I always felt I needed something to fill in the gap. Ontario is a big province and the "inbetween" guys on the ONTARS net seemed rather weak.
I had nearly 90 feet available from my 2nd story eavestrough to the back corner of my lot. While googling up shortened dipoles I came across this product after a few articles on NVIS skywave installations.A gently used second hand Shorty 4080 came up on a swap page and I grabbed it!
It is exactly what I wanted! It claimed it was designed for 20-30 feet AGL. I ended up with 23 feet at the house and 19 feet at the rear.
I set up an antenna switch between the vertical and the Shorty to my trusty FT-101. NVIS was indeed happening! Close contacts were about the same S meter reading and the farther ones were best on the vertical but within a few hundred miles the Shorty gave anywhere from 10 to 40 db extra!
The best example was listening to an American check-in from Kingston, NY which is nearly 300 miles away. S9 on the vertical and 30 db over on the Shorty!
My city location will never allow me to have a perfect antenna farm but being able to have an antenna like this fill in the "gaps" is a welcome addition.
The product is both rugged and well made. Best of all to you American friends, there are no supply chain issues between Canada and the USA!
SWR on 80 is under 3:1 over most of the band, 1:1 at resonance. 40 is about the same, maybe a bit less broad. No problem even for those modern rigs with "girlyman" transistor finals! Most such rigs have built-in Antenna tuners anyway. Eventually I will trim my Shorty a bit higher on 80 to favour the upper phone part of the band. I've got a Heath DX-100 I'm restoring to use on the AM nets!
