Good for basic comms Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
This makes for a relatively inexpensive desk mic which is heavy enough to set there properly, and provide decent basic comms. I rewired an adapter to work on my Yaesu FTDX3000. Sound is "decent" and a good value if under $50. This mic doesn't have much in the bass department, not giving you anything past perhaps the 300-2700 or 200-2800 setting on your radio's (in my case, Yaesu) mic bandwidth (sound between a hand mic and an MD100). If you're someone who just wants an inexpensive yet solid desk mic which keeps out of the way, with no "clunk" sound to the PTT button, you will be happy. Works best when you hold it up to your mouth and cross-talk from the side, as you can pop P's if you speak too close and straight-on and speaking too far away with the mic gain up gives some room noise. Decent mic, if you don't care about sounding beefy, and just want good comms and aren't going to be fiddling with bandwidth settings. This is technically a Kenwood mic, but if you wire-up an adapter matching pin-outs, the stock Yaesu mic settings will be fine, and if you turn on compression for DX, cut the bass by about -12 and boost the mic gain to fill most all of your ALC. That'll be about right. As mentioned, I cross-talk the front with the side/middle of my lips physically touching the side of the mic and mic gain set at about 30 on the Yaesu (rag chew) or up to 35 (DX with compression). That means I am really close to the mic hole, but cross-talking this way means you can keep the gain down and remove any room noise (treating it sort of like a handheld grenade mic). I find this mic easy to use, looks nice, and sound is decent enough. It just sets there safely and neatly when I don't need it. I like that. There is a motorola version of this mic sold on AliExpress, also. I believe that mic might have some boost adjustment in the back, but this Kenwood mic just has the empty screw hole, leaving that aspect unavailable (not needed, anyway).

Bargain Desk Mic for Kenwood HF and VHF Radios! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The Oppxun KMC-9C is an 8-pin modular desk mic that is initially mean for VHF/UHF radios, but also works very well on the Kenwood TS480SAT, even though it is not listed as a working radio. It takes the same RJ45 plug for Kenwood. The left speaker function button has no function on my 480SAT, but I do not mind, because the PTT on the right works.. There is an Icom version as well. This mic is actually of a quite decent build, with no "clunk" sound when you push PTT. It is of a decent weight for it's size, also. I am thrilled with it, as it only cost $33 plus a little shipping. I have a very in-depth review on my site thestingyham blogspot, and I have more photos there. I highly recommend this as a desk mic. It is also easily picked-up and used that way. I much prefer it over the stock hand mic that came with my radio, as it's just better overall. It seems to run off of a simple (but decent) electret mic element. Very happy with the purchase. You can also find it on Aliexpress under a few other names, as well. This one was the cheapest I found.

To find this mic on AliExpress, try searching on "8-pin mic modular base station" or similar. Once you find one, search the suggestions below it, and you may find the same thing cheaper. It could actually be a KMC product. Hard to tell.
