Review Summary For : Sony MDR-7509HD Headphones
Reviews: 1MSRP:
Description:
(These headphones were available in the early 2010s.) The Sony MDR-7509HD were near-the-top of what Sony referred to as their 'Professional' headphones. They are of the 'closed' design in which an effort has been made to attenuate sounds from the local environment and they have relatively 'cushy' ear-pads; the cups are large enough so that they fit over-the-ears easily. Sony specified their impedance as being 24 Ohms. (Experience indicates that they drive easily.)

Marginal Sound - Comfortable - Not Rugged Mechanically Time Owned: more than 12 months.
When I first bought the MDR-7509HD Headphones (around 2012) I thought that they were terribly 'dry' (listening to classical music) and I put-the-away for years.

(This section ... how the MDR-7509HDs sound ... is being completely modified from my review back in the middle of 2022.)

The MDR-7509HD Headphones, at least my pair, have poorly tracking drivers (the 'speakers') with the left and right channels showing significant variations in their frequency response as a signal generator is swept across them. With an in-line amplitude equalizer ('Equalizer APO' software) adjusted carefully the MDR-7509HD Headphones can be made to sound not too bad but they're marginal at-best. (If I can find some 50mm drivers on eBay I may consider replacing the stock units. I replaced the 40mm drivers in a pair of MDR-V600 Headphones and the results were very positive.)

The MDR-7509HD Headphones are quite comfortable with there being plenty of room inside the large ear-pads. (I wear glasses and long-term comfort is important to me.)

In the past I've had numerous experiences with the infamous 'flaking' ear-pads on Sony headphones but so far the pads on the MDR-7509HDs seem to be holding-up well.

(in my opinion)
The MDR-509HD Headphones have a potential mechanical failure mechanism due to the use of plastic in the joint which allows the headphones to rock back-and-forth (so they conform to the listener's head). If one were to twist one of the earpieces significantly beyond normal use I suspect that the plastic 'plug' in the joint would break-in-two (the part is made of two, plastic, pieces that are glued together).
