Review Summary For : Radioddity GS-5B
Reviews: 1MSRP: $104.99
Description:
The GS-5B is a rugged and reliable 5W dual-band analog two-way radio for ham use. It features Bluetooth programming from a smartphone as well as true manual programming via keypad, very convenient to program the radio anytime anywhere. The bright orange color of this radio makes it easy to see in all situations and is a real benefit for emergency services. The bright color can be seen quickly during daylight or at night, making it easy to see in the field or when in use by emergency team members. In addition to standard accessories, it also comes with a programming cable, an 8.9” long high gain antenna and a high-quality air acoustic earpiece. The GS-5B is an excellent choice for those who need the features and versatility of the Baofeng UV-5R but with a more mature look, professional feeling, greater durability and extended capabilities. Disclaimer: No License is required to purchase this radio, nor to Monitor (listen) to the many Amateur (Ham) Radio frequencies. However, an FCC License is required to Transmit (Talk) on Amateur Radio Frequencies in the USA. Please visit http://wireless.fcc.gov/services/amateur/licensing to learn more.

A nice HT for general & SHTF utility Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
More costly than a Baofeng (same price as a Yaesu FT-65r) but will likely outlast 2-3 UV-5Rs - YMMV.

A top selling point is Bluetooth programming from an app. I used the Android version but there’s an IOS app too.

I was able to quickly enter the main SHFT channels and program the radio from my Pixel 5a. You can program using the radio buttons too, of course, but that’s tedious.

The device has extended RX/TX and one can turn off TX on those bands where you or the device are not licensed to transmit.

Another second main feature is scanning - you can scan your memory channels (all those SHTF channels) 3-3-3 (3rd of the month, 3hr intervals 3a/6a/9a/12p/3p/6p/12a for 3min) for practice or 3-3 any day you need to do so.

A third main feature us USB Mini charging - the port is on the removable battery, so you can buy a relatively cheap spare and charge it up for backup. It comes with a desk stand charger and a “spy” behind the ear headphone too!
