Great vintage microphone! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Old dynamic mics are a weakness for me...

The EV-623 is a nice mic for amateur radio. If you get a good one, the output should be strong (for a dynamic mic), and have a slight "peak" in the mids.

For comparison, it is not quite as strong as a perfectly performing (vintage) Shure 55s or 55sw and not as quite as flat in response. If you want those beautiful warm tones of a 55s series, you'll need to add a little low end to the EV623, but not much.

Being an omnidirectional mic, there is almost no proximity effect with the low frequencies. The on/off switch is factory set to "down" for "on" (like many old EV mics).

For some comparison, my IC-7300 settings: I run my EV623 at 75 percent gain, and compression level 4. Bass from -1 to +1 depending on the band conditions. Same for the treble.... -1 to +1. This mic does not need a lot of tweaking. Compression at 4 facilitates varying mic-to-piehole distances. Add compression to taste, and to suit your operating style and conditions. With my settings I can be from 12 inches to about 3 inches from the mic and have consistent output. Closer than 3 inches you get a bit for pop and breath noise. Your own experience will no doubt require fine tuning.
