Capable and strong duty with some mods Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Rugged 6 channels commercial HF SSB from England. Mine was 5500 model and it arrived here with crystals removed, but following experience of Mehmed TB5X and Service manual I successfully added DDS VFO and got unusual 80/60/40m LSB/USB rig with A/B VFO. Although unit is by design for up to 15 Mhz, output filters in this one are limited to below 9 MHz. Also, every channel switch goes trough separate RX and TX filter about only 80 kHz wide, but I managed to cower SSB parts of these three bands nicely for practical use. It has modular construction inside and is not hard to work on. Designed in the middle of 80's it doesn't have SMT parts. Found out that it works nicely with Sl5351 DDS VFO from China, but not with AD9850 chip. I also modified CLARIFIER pot to become MIC GAIN for setting RF OUT on RTTY. This Orion 5500 model gives full 100-130W output easily when SWR is less than 1:1.2. I saw these units were used for mobile service before, with vehicle HF whips, but now I use it for SSB and digital modes on 80m, 60m and 40m HAM band. For this use and with these relativly simple modes it is capable PA unit and solidly built radio too.
