I was looking for an antenna for Pota/Sota/Wwff, and to take on holiday. I had previously used an end fed halfwave and was very happy with the results, except that is was qrp only. I was looking for something that could handle a bit more power and came across the Bugout XL.

There are a couple of YouTube reviews, which looked promising. I sent some emails out and Matt at Reliance Antennas was the only person to reply. Matt is also a Pota operator and after checking out the options, I decided on the Bugout XL.

I was off to Samoa, and frankly I thought I had left it too late to get something shipped to ZL. Matt had the antenna shipped and it arrived in one week. I had time to have a practice deployment with it, and it worked superbly, running up to 100w cw.

In Samoa, I was only running 4 or 5 watts, but in 6 operating days I worked 140+ qso's, with numerous contacts into Europe.

The unit itself is well constructed and sealed. It has a robust fixing eye. The antenna wire itself is very light, but strong enough to deal with any snags in trees etc.

Although tuned for 40/20/15 and 10, I used an Elecraft ATU and it worked very well in 17 and 30m. I didn't try 12m.

If you need a lightweight, robust and effective antenna, which can deal with a bit of power, this is a great and cost effective solution. ZL4TE / 5W0TE
