Review Summary For : Grundig Satellit 800

Description:
The Grundig Satellit 800 Millennium gives you the ultimate in features, performance, convenience, and sound. It's incredibly powerful. Technologically sophisticated. Yet easy and intuitive to use. Whether you're an experienced shortwave listener or a newcomer to the world of international broadcasting, this is the radio to get. Your ordinary shortwave receiver doesn't have features like:

Synchronous detection to improve the purity of shortwave and AM reception. This helps clarify fading signals and reduce interference from adjacent frequencies.
AGC- Automatic Gain Control. The onboard microprocessor monitors signal strength, adjusting gain up or down to compensate for atmospheric and other conditions. It's like an onboard radio engineer. Choose either fast or slow AGC mode.
Excellent sensitivity and selectivity. The Satellit 800 Millennium receives stations most radios can't, including weak daytime shortwave signals.
Three built-in bandwidths for shortwave, using electronically switched IF filters: 6.0, 4.0 and 2.3 KHz.
You aren't limited to shortwave signals. The Satellit 800 Millennium is the ultimate portable AM/FM radio, too. Enjoy FM stereo with headphones. Listen to the VHF aircraft band from 118 to 137 MHz. Many of the same advanced features which enhance shortwave broadcasts do the same for AM reception, too. Listen to distant AM stations at night without fading. Pick out those weak stations on adjacent frequencies.

Enjoy legendary Grundig audio quality from the 4" built-in dynamic speaker. Adjust the sound with bass and treble controls - tailor it to your room or your taste.

Terrific Radio Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This radio has a great feel to it. Nice, big, smooth controls...large display. Fantastic audio. Good reception on all bands.

It does have a very few 'birdies' when using the internal antenna....but really shines with an external antenna. (Am using a 70 foot wire).

AM Sync works great. The excellent MW performance was a pleasent surprise. Very selective.

I am very pleased with this radio. (Did I mention the great audio....?)

Nice Unit Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
People who hate to read forever before they can understand operational features, will love the 800! Learn to set clocks (2) in one minute, store stations in one more. 4 inch speaker has great tones, and even in an office with computers, and other wave killers, the 800 does reasonably well on the lower bands during the day. As with all SWL, the night rules. Stero headphones are a nice touch for FM. I own a Sony 2010, and the 800, while much, much bigger, is easier to use, sounds better, and has much better controls. SWL capability is about the same for both units. A great feature of the 800 is not loosing all stored information when the batteries are changed. Sling this horse up on your shoulder and jive on. . .

For what it is , it's great !! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Let me start by saying, this is a good receiver, I am very pleased with it and it's on 24 Hrs a day (don't tell Gray Davis that). Sensitivity is good, stability is outstanding, audio is outstanding and in general it is more versatile radio than the high-power tabletops (basically Short-wave/SSB only). It has full AM band, Full FM band (stereo with headset) and full Air band with squelch. Weak points ....Scanning is very limited, if you use the "whip" antenna it picks up it's own synthesizer at spots on the dial, but with a outside antenna ...it's excellent. It runs real cool and only draws about 14 Watts. When I'm not using it for Short wave it's on the Air band or a Classic FM station in Santa Barbara and I'm in San Diego! It has a tremendous FM front end, good selectivity and great sensitivity. The audio is a pleasure to listen to, no fatigue here! Very impressive in size and the display can easily be read from across the room And Yes, Art Bell sounds great on this radio. SSB steps tune to 50Hz, this is fine depending on what your expectations are. I like it over my Sony 2010, I never liked the volume control on that radio. The "S" meter is very tight on the HF bands ...if I could find a schematic, I'd like to "loosen" it up some. I've been unable to find a service manual for it. The Green LEDs light up the display and S-meter quite nice at night and you don't have to worry about burning out any bulbs. For what it is and for what you pay (especially in the used market) it's a excellent radio .....nice size knobs too ....73

Amazing receiver Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Owner of a small summer cottage in a utility free environment in the deep woods I use minimum solar power for lighting etc. The Satellit 800, operated on batteries with a 90' long wire, simply amazed me with its sensitivity, stable & clean reception. Picked up S.S.B. VK's, ZL's w/S9+ on 20 meters & all sorts of DX Broadcast stations. Sound is simply wonderful. The AM Sync feature is also quite handy when a station comes in w/QSB.

Big accurate readout & controls, this powerful radio comes quite close to my FT990 for reception, including great selectivity. Although a bit bulky, I would highly recommend it.

Outstanding Audio Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
All of the magazine reviews related to the Satellit 800 have commented on the radio's outstanding audio quality. I agree - this radio is a pleasure to listen to.

I did have problems with the radio related to the VFO and also a bad power switch - it was returned to Drake for repair (hence, the "4" rating) and promptly returned - operating normally.

Still, this is an excellent radio that anyone would be happy to own.
