Small Super Radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The reason why some like Visar is the size, small and puts out 5 watts.. very handy and it have a lot of PTT ID (MDC, STAR, ATIS, QCII, DTMF, Single Tone)

The bad side is the antenna connector it gets loose, no problem with a metal hydride batt pack, it can last for 8 hrs or more. Just don't sit on it throw it or get it wet, the controller board is thin and is attached with clips directly to the front housing of the radio. Other than that, its a great radio.. Although the "DN" version has thicker board.

Make sure you don't abuse this radio and it will last long... Mine is a "DN" Version.

Excellant Radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have 3 UHF, 2VHF, and 1 800Mhz VISAR. I have owned these radios for many years now and have had no problems with them. I use them for EMS and ham radio use (mainly IRLP) and have nothing bad to say about them. The only thing I wish the radio could do is more channels. Having 16 channels is sometimes a drawback for me, but I manage!

Good radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
It's better than most Ham gear but sort of high maintenance for a commercial HT. If it was a Ham radio, I'd give it a 5.

small and powerful professional radio Time Owned: more than 12 months.
VISAR is a very small MOTOROLA radio set, it is even smaller then any Japanese portable radio, it looks like a FRS radio, it can easily put into pocket, but its performance is as well as other MOTOROLA professional radio, for example MOTOROLA HT1000. So MOTOROLA say “The VISAR portable radio is more powerful than radios twice its size.?
VISAR give us high power output at 7.2V, the VHF model VISAR can output 5W and UHF model VISAR can output 4W. There is only new model Japanese portable radio with MOS-FET RF parts can output such power at 7.2V. I have tried to adjust the output by VISAR RSS software, it can give higher output then its Technical Specifications.
We can find two model of VISAR radio, which frequency range is 136-178 MHz and 403-470 MHz. They are fine working for HAM band. Its sensitivity is 0.28µV@ 12dB SINAD. I have tested it at 435MHz, I found its sensitivity is better then 0.20µV@ 12dB SINAD, without adjust any parts. With the helical antenna for VISAR, it is as well as Japanese portable radio.
VISAR has 16 channels, but it must program by computer and RSS software. It also can
scan the designate channel. As the high-level professional radio, it has some signaling options include Quik-Call II/MDC/STAR/ATIS. MDC-1200/STAR/ATIS will pronounce special audio before your talk, it is PTT ID. It makes your calling distinctive and arrestive. Most of the amateurish radio set has not MDC-1200/STAR/ATIS signaling.
It can be programmed power output level and signaling by each channel. VISAR has PL/ DPL encode and decode, it is adapt to many repeater include professional station. The decode operate does not need any accessory.
VISAR radio has a loud volume, it is louder than most Japanese portable radios. It can be heard clearly in the noisy condition. It has many accessories, it will bring you many superfluity function. Some concealment earphone let you like CIA employee.
The shortcoming of VISAR radio for HAM, it must program by computer and RSS software and RIB interface. The price of the VISAR is very expensive.
I like VISAR very much, though it is weightily. It is a quite portable radio.
