GREAT Wire! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This is review for Heil-Wire.

In short, high impedance D-104, run into an impedance matching preamp, then into my IC-7200. I feed the radio from the cathode of a 12AY7 tube. Its coupled with a capacitor, and padded down with a variable voltage divider.

I was getting just a little bit of stray RF that was causing the amplitude of the mic/preamp combination to "waver" a bit. My output at about 500w from an AL-811 would waver as a result.

Inadequate shielding was the issue, on account of such a high impedance mid and a preamp to boot!

Heil-Wire cured the problem completely. Not sure if you can ever totally avoid all stray RF in the shack, but it only effected the D-104 when used with the preamp. All the other mics ran great.

Anyway, it fixed the issue, and it all works well.

And.... as a side comment... the Heil-wire is really easy to work with, strips well, and has really nice, thick braid over the "mic" pair of wires. The insulation does shrink a little, so watch the heat and time when soldering. Anyone with just a little soldering experience should have no problem. The wire outer jacket is sized to work really nice with ICOM type mic connectors too (and fit the strain relief on the D-104... amazing!).

Just really good mic cable.

Outstanding Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
After many years of searching for quality 5 and 8 pin mic connectors. The Heil connectors are excellent!. Very well made. It seems as the years go by, the quality of the connectors available from the vendors were getting worse. The Heil has the nice knurled ring that is easy to grip and screw on.
The price is right also. 2 for $7.95 from Cheapham.Com

great idea! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I have been bit by the fidelity ssb audio bug!I entered this mode in 3-2000 and never looked back.
I am using double shielded cable for both audio and rf [rg-214 coax for rf]
I received a sample of Bob's new heilwire and I'm very impressed. The concept of shielding the mic/audio lines only and still having ptt lines in one cable is very clever and eliminates any ground loop problems and inductive pick up of hum ...ya gotta wire 'em up correctly too!
My only long term concern is the cable being 18ga. and only 7 strands flexing often may cause an internal break. Also soldering small connectors would be better with a 20 or 24ga wire with many more strands...BUT...for now I am very impressed with this stuff. It solders nicely, strips nicely, when soldering the insulation does not melt up, and the diameter of the cable fits all the strain reliefs perfectly no more tape or heat shrink to build up the cable.
Cosmetically if it's an issue the cable is flat black and looks very nice.

bottom line, a well made/engineered 4 conductor 2 shielded audio cable. The shield is tight yet good to work with.

For those looking for a good shielded mic cable try some of this stuff, you'll be pleased with the results.ka7gkn@arrl.net

New HeilSound Cable/Connectors a Real Winner! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I just received my first shipment of HeilSound micorophone cable in bulk & HeilSound connectors both for the HeilSound microphones & audio use. It has been a long time in coming but well worth the wait. The cabling sports the HeilSound logo so there can be no doubt about it's authenticity. After skinning back the cable outer jacket, I cheerfully noted the color-coded wiring is heavily insulated and tinned, stranded copper! Black/White inside 100% tinned shield & Red/Green outside the braid specifically for PTT use. The outside jacket is very thick yet very flexible & standard size. I noted the paper-wrapping just inside the outer jacket to help insure my trusty ole boyscout knife does not skin the inner cabling... nice touch! The HeilSound connectors are a departure from what I have been accustomed to seeing in audio applications. First, they are also color-coded with big, heavy plastic knurled & threaded fittings over a very professional looking heavy plated metal. Further the cable end of the connector has a flexible end that stretches around various cable diameters (if you use brand-x cable) making a very professional fit unlike most you see out there. The business end of the connector uses a unique way to secure the pins inside the connector, without the bothersome tiny phillips screw. A plastic bushing is conically press-fitted behind the pins. After soldering your custom-cable, you simply push this bushing into the connector, screw the knurled knob and the cable is Locked into the connector, and held by Both the conical bushing and the flexible end-fitting... very impressive 1-2 punch indeed. Next step is to fire up the Kilowatt to appreciate the special design of separating the PTT conductors Outside the Audio conductors. 73 es God bless, murf/wv4r.
