Great Radio...but Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I love this thing. With outboard xmit and rcv DSP filtering this radio is a stunner. However, why such a crappy on board Noise blanking system ? My Old Drake TR-7 NB-7 is far better than either of the factory supplied NB's on the 1000D. Thanks to DSP its not a big deal, but when spending this kinda money it should be !! I understand the MP is not much better? Inspite of that, this radio is a real joy to operate. Previous radios owned, or still own: Drake T4XC/R4C, TR7A, Kenwood TS-830S, 950, Ten Tec Omni V.

FT-1000(D) Tuning Mods Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought the 1000D used. Best radio I have ever owned. Traded in a FT-920 on it. The 1000D is built like a tank and operates solidly on SSB & CW. Have not tried other modes. The tuning rate is definitely too fast in stock form for my taste. I ordered the tuning rate mods for both main & sub receiver from Int'l Radio Service Division. Delivery promises were broken on several occasions. When they finally arrived, I was disappointed with the PC board construction workmanship. Installation was more difficult than necessary due to mis-alignment of the mounting lugs requiring some re-work. The sub receiver VFO didn't work after the mods due to a solder bridge on a ribbon cable connector. This couldn't possibly have been tested before shipment. Good news, after removing the solder bridge, everything works as advertised and makes the 1000D a joy to tune. The mods are definitely an improvement if you can get through the wait for delivery and QC problems. The prices for used 1000D's are getting into the range of other rigs. Full set of filters and dual receive make this a fine radio.

Very nice; solid performer Time Owned: unknown months.
Negatives first. A lot of fan noise. Not noticable in the heat of a contest or when using phones, but otherwise can drive you crazy. The QSK isn't effective over about 20 or 25 wpm and features a lot of relay clattering. Noise blankers are typical of those I've used on various rigs. They either do nothing or make the noise worse. Maybe it's just me or the fact that I work mainly CW.

Positives. I love the fact that this is a modern day boat anchor. You'll break your back trying to pick it up. Even though (or maybe because) I've never run an amp and tend toward QRP, I like the full 200 watts output. And I can set it at lower levels and it will stay there. It has a nice feel. The controls, especially tuning, are smooth and feel good. The receiver is free of birdies and weird noises. The antenna tuner is very effective. It matched my center-fed Zepp on several bands. Although I miss being able to use QSK (I've had three Ten-Tecs), the TR switching is nice and smooth.

The main competition (to me) is the Omni 6. Would I give up the built in PS and ATU and general coverage receive for the legendary Ten-Tec QSK? It's a close call, but for now I'm sticking with the FT-1000.

FT-1000 - a quality product Time Owned: unknown months.
I've used the FT-1000 exclusively from Europe and Africa. Previous to the FT-1000 I've operated several HF rigs by the various manufactures. Without question, the FT-1000 is the best HF radio I've ever had the pleasure of operating. I've used the FT-1000 side by side with my IC-751A (another excellent radio). At first glance the FT-1000 does not appear to be as sensitive as the IC-751A, however upon extensive review, I've come to note the FT-1000 "hears" differently when compared to the IC-751A. Much less receiver noise with the FT-1000 means weaker signals can be heard, and listner fatigue is greatly reduced with the FT-1000. S meter readings for a given signal is higher on the IC-751A, but the received signal is easier to listen to on the FT-1000. My observation is a result of years of listening to the two radios side by side - using the same antenna with an A/B switch. Bottom line, the FT-1000 is a HF rig for those of us who have been in the hobby for a while and have come to appreciate a super-refined radio. Truly, and trust me on this one, in a class to and of itself. I don't just say this because I own one, I too have owned my share of dogs. Can you say, IC-735 (what a dog). 73 de 5H3HG, N5GMY, KE5KJ, KE5KJ/YV5, SV/WY3V, WY3V, N5HG.

Good solid rig with a few mods. Time Owned: unknown months.
I'm pretty happy with the FT-1000 now, although it was a disappointment at first. It had IMD generated in the first IF stages by a noise blanker transistor that runs wide open when the noise blanker is turned OFF!! Adding three diodes and a resistor completely cured that problem, and reduced close-spaced IMD by an extreme amount!
I was amazed. The 1000 has NO transmitter overshoot (common with many rigs today). The power stays where you set it even at the leading edges of characters. The receiver works as well as my 751A's for weak signal CW DX(which are a lot better than the 940SDX and 775DSP I owned!) and the QSK works well. The tuning rate was too fast, so I added mods to slow down the tuning rate. Other than one spur on 20 meters, I have no problems with spurious response.
