Superb Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I had to use Yaesu's factory repair service on my 4 year old FT-857D. I must admit I was wary from the negative reports I had heard about them. After the radio arrived I received an e-mail with a day or say requesting payment option for 35 dollar fee (refundable upon repair) to check it out. Within a few days of that, I got the repair cost. I OK'ed the repairs and it was a done deal in a couple more days.

I think mine was about as bad as it gets. My PC was hit by lightning, and although the rig was unplugged from the PS and antennas, the computer line was inadvertently left connected, so it took a pretty good zap into the serial connection. I have been checking out this rig on all possible conditions since it's return, PC connection, all modes and bands. It is like a new rig. I could not be happier with their service and the excellent communications.

Outstanding.

OUTSTANDING SERVICE Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Have owned FT-101B, FT-101EE, FT-101E, FT-301, FT-901DM, FT-2 AUTO, FT-221. Never needed any repair on any of them. Left the hobby for 30 years. Got a VX-170 2m HT, with excellent results.
Grabbed an FT-450D, and was very satisfied with it until it needed service. Contacted 800 number and talked to Technical, who assisted me with troubleshooting, and told me all I needed to know to ship it back to them.
June 7- Rig received at Yaesu
June 10-Received Postcard giving turnaround info.
June 14- Unit Fixed
June 18- Received Unit in Pennsylvania

Very happy with the experience.

Fail Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I recently sent in a 2003 Yaesu Mark V Field transceiver for repair. It had intermittent transmit which I traced back to the microphone connector at the rig. I asked them to either replace or re-solder the connector. They came back and said; well we tested it for continuity and found no problems. I again asked them to either re-solder the connections or replace the connector and they claimed there was no problem and the work wasn’t needed. Got the rig back and what do you know, it now intermittent again. That's $75 down the drain. I can jiggle the connector and it works again for a while. Yaesu doesn't listen and they don't care. They are interested in only new rig warranty work. If you own something older they shoo you out and don't want to be bothered. Do not buy Yaesu products, they don't support their products.

I ran into some rig problems recently and found Yaesu Service to be absolutley excellent. They made a sincere effort to repair things on time and correctly and they stand by their products. The two biggest repair facilities for ham radio are run by Yaesu and ICOM both of which have to repair tons of equipment monthly due to a larger market share. The other manufacturer repair facilities are smaller and their challenges are different. Again, I found Yaesu service to be excellent.

Parts Dept. Thumbs Down Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I ordered a replacement antenna SMA jack for the Yaesu 60R and was told the entire chassis will be sent with that part attached. You just simply switch out the parts. A few days later I received the antenna for the HT and not the part I ordered (The description was correct on the packing list but the part number was wrong).

I called back and they were sorry but said I must forst send back the wrong part THEN they would send the correct one. I said NO, please send the correct one now and I will return this now anyway. The parts man Daniel got a bit upset and said that's not how we do things. I needed it as I was going on a trip on the 6th of March. Daniel then sais, well I'll ask my supervisor then call you back. Never got a call back so I assumed it was on the way. I did send back the wrong part. They still failed to send the correct part.

I called and asked to talk to someone else - Beatrice was her name and she apologized once more and said it was on the way. Well I just got it yesterday almost 1-month since I ordered and guess what? They charged me again!! I'm sticking with Alinco or homebrew for now on! There is no excuse for this.

Excellent communications * good value Time Owned: more than 12 months.
A few months ago a lightning strike took out some of the equipment here. All of it was soon replaced, with one exception – my FT857D.

After the strike, the ’857 would no longer power up and a check of the fuses showed them to be okay. I’ve only used a repair service once before, one with whom I was quite happy. Unfortunately, N1EQ (who I continue to recommend highly) doesn’t work on the smaller mobile DC-daylight rigs. A call to several other services, based on their eHam reviews, ended with the same result – no one wants to touch these tiny rigs!
I don’t really blame them…

That left only one choice – Yaesu, with a fairly low rating on eHam. I dread dealing with huge companies and avoid them when possible. I’m a Mom & Pop kinda guy, given the choice.

A call to their customer service rep confirmed their shipping address and their fee for an estimate ($30), then:

•21 Dec – mailed the radio to California via UPS.
•27 Dec – Yaesu rep called to verify receipt of radio and ask permission to charge my VISA card the $30
•29 Dec – Yaesu called to inform me that the repair fee would be $70 minus the $30 that I’d paid for the estimate, so $40 total - far less than I’d been expecting
•31 Dec – Yaesu called to inform me that radio is now enroute via UPS and gave me a tracking number
•5 Jan – Radio arives and works like a charm
The whole processs couldn’t have gone better. Total turn-around time was 2 weeks despite including two major holidays.

Great for parts Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I am restoring an old FT-890 and needed a trimmer capacitor and the rubber friction ring for the main tuning knob. An inquiry via e-mail brought a quick response. They sent the trimmer in a few days (75 cents!) and they then ordered the ring from Japan which I got a couple of weeks later for a few dollars. Could not have asked for better service.

A Whole Lot of Nothin' Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I sent my used (out of warranty) FT-817ND to have the tech diagnose and repair a rogue oscillation and a problem with "something" which causes the incoming signals to sound as though there is a loose connection somewhere when they are strong enough to activate the AGC. The tech installed a new EPROM and sent the radio back with a nearly $200 repair bill. It works exactly the same as it did when I sent it in!

I still wonder what an EPROM is supposed to have to do with the RF/IF chain. I spoke to the service rep after I received the radio back, and there was no resolution to the problem.

tech and parts sevice Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I called yaesu looking for the older style large five pin jones plug for a G-800 rotator. The tech guy focused in on the right plug within minutes and told me they had been discontinued but if i ddn't mind a used one, he had one I could have for free. Boom, it arrived in the mail within two days.
Wonderful help, wonderful service.

great service Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is going to sound like a repeat of the last review. I sent my FT-8800R back because the radio would not turn on (just a "pop"). After talking to Tech support I desided to return it. They called to let me know that they received it, and kept me up to date with telephone and postcards. The whole process took less than 2 weeks including shipping. Thanks Yaesu

Fast Service - Excellent Communication Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I sent my six-year-old FT8800R back to the factory when I suddenly lost the "right side" of my receiver. It was returned to me within two weeks, expertly packaged and repaired for only a $35 bench fee plus shipping. Yaesu stayed in touch with me throughout the repair process - via e-mail and postcard. A very positive experience.
