VX-8GR Repairs - BAD news! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Don’t purchase a new Yaesu VX-8GR expecting any kind of reasonable warranty or repair service time!

I bought a new VX-8GR at the Dayton Hamvention and had it for 2 weeks, before I accidently dropped it from waist level on to a carpeted floor. Have you ever dropped an HT before? I have, many times. When I picked it up, I wasn’t expecting any damage beyond maybe a scratch or ding on my new HT. Instead, the display was screwed up! Two blank horizontal lines in the display making it hard to read the frequencies, etc. I have dropped my fair share of HTs over the years and have never had one do this before. The HT had no visible signs of being damaged, beyond the display. No scratches, no dings, nothing!

So, I sent it to Yaesu for repair. I was initially told they had a 2 week turn-around time. OK, I thought, I really don’t have an alternative at this point, so I’ll just have to wait. After two weeks, I called and was told, “Oh yeah, the LCD display is on order and should be in next week. We’ll get it fixed and out to you.” A week later (3 weeks now, since I sent it to Yaesu for repairs), I received a call from the Yaesu Tech saying, “I have to have your OK for a $55+ repair charge, plus return shipping fee, before I can repair it.” I said OK, go ahead and repair it. Then he says, “And one more thing….the LCD displays are on backorder and it will be 6 to 8 weeks before we get any.” Keep in mind this is a newly released radio, introduced at the 2010 Dayton Hamvention! Yaesu has no parts to repair them!

So remember, if you buy a new radio from Yaesu, don’t accidently drop it on soft carpet and don’t expect it to be repaired in a timely fashion, nor for free! And, if you are an informed consumer and reading this, just beware of Yaesu’s marketing quote, “Heavy Duty, tough and rugged ready for your field operations.” and don’t believe a word of it about this radio. (Right off the Yaesu VX-8GR/E marketing brochure)

Buyer beware!…

Yaesu Quadra warranty Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Yaesu Quadra warranty. IT IS THREE YEARS! Not one year as was told to k8pvd

I had a problem with the Quadra SWR metering and sent it to Yaesu with a copy of my Purchase receipt from a Yaesu dealer showing it was only two years old. I was told they required a credit card since it was out of warranty. I reminded the customer service rep that the warranty on the Quadra was three years from the original purchase date. I was told that I was wrong! After a dead end conversation, I called my dealer and the district manager got involved and I got a call back from Yaesu and they confirmed the 3 years. I was told to send it in. I did, they shipped it back in one week with the same problem !!!. They did nothing to it. Dealer had to get involved again and Yaesu issued a UPS pickup and I finally got it back fixed after another week!

Quadra repair - out of warranty Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have several Yaesu radios; never had a problem with any of them. Decided to spend the big bucks and get a Quadra a little over a year ago. Well, 10 days after the one year warranty expired (of course), the Quadra suffered a failure in the input circuit. Would only work if ant. tuner was turned on; if off, amp goes into protect, and that lovely bad component burning plastic smell. At first I thought I can live with using the antenna tuner on all the time; then I thought: at the cost of a Quadra, why should I?

I pulled the covers thinking I could see or smell the location. Nope; this machine is way too complex, and also built like a tank. Same deal looking at the schematics.. I put the covers back on. Way too complex for me.

My first thought was to give Tim at Midwest a shot at it; and at second thought, maybe I wanted someone to look at it who looks at a lot of Quadras. I called Yaesu and talked to Ron. He urged me to ship both components in ASAP. I did; $98 UPS. That's two heavy boxes headed to California.

I must tell you I was pleasantly surprised. First message was it was "out of warranty" and they needed a credit card. Second message was an estimate of $150 plus shipping back (meaning my total cost being around $350). And then later in the day, I got a message that it was repaired and they had honored the warranty even though it had expired. I called Ron and thanked him.

The two boxes were sitting on my stoop at exactly 2 weeks after the Quadra and PS had arrived at their facility. OK, so they tripled boxed both components for the return shipping (I had only used the double boxes), and both control/power cables were carefully wrapped and included. (I was convinced they would lose them). I quickly set the Quadra up with my transceiver, and it worked perfectly...so I ran it through its paces: perfect!

I can only tell you my dealings with Yaesu amateur repair and Ron, as well as some other folks there - Stephanie and Jackie - was a very positive experience. They repaired the amp even though out of warranty. I don't know what that repair actually cost Yaesu, but in return for that small investment, I told Ron they get a customer for life. I appreciate folks who understand the value of customer service. 5 out of 5.

FT7800R out of warranty repair Time Owned: more than 12 months.
My FT7800R developed intermittent audio output, so I sent it back to the factory for repair. The radio is 3 years old and out of warranty. They found some bad solder joints, repaired it and sent it back within 4 days after receiving it. They charged me a $35 bench (diagnostic fee), but did not charge for the repair, or for shipping. I expected to have to pay $70 plus for repair, so I was pleasantly surprised.

I will use them any time Time Owned: N.A.
I have 5 Yaesu radios and 3 Icoms. Had one problem with my older FT-2000 and sent it in. They called me the day they received it and I had it back in 5 days. Several years ago I sent in a FT-8800 which was damaged by operator error. It was under warrenty and I called them and told them what happened they told me no problem they would take care of it and they did paid shipping both ways. They have excellent service in my book and have been using Yaesu radios from the FT-101E forward.

Yaesu Repair Service is Below Par Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I am writing this over 8 years after my Yaesu Service nightmare pertaining to a DOA out of box FT-100. Evidently, they were horrible then, and not much has changed since.

After finally having the radio replaced with an FT-100D, I sold it at a loss, without ever taking it out of the box. The way this was handled by Yaesu, was enough to permanently drive me away as a customer.

I subsequently sold off most of my Yaesu gear (so that I would never need to buy parts from them), and never spent another dime on any new gear since all of this.

They swore to me at a Dayton Hamvention they would get me back as a customer. It didn't happen... As I write this almost 10 years later, my feelings about them have not changed.

Satisfied Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Have an FT-8800R that required an out of warranty repair to the mic socket. Everything went smoothly, the people I spoke to on the phone were courteous, professional and pleasant, the radio was evaluated two days after they received it and was repaired and returned in less time than they quoted. Repair was correct and the radio has been fine for 6 months.

Great Service Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have had two very positive experiences with Yaesu factory service. I owned an FT1000d which needed a warranty repair. The rig was repaired quickly and worked flawlessly thereafter for 15 years until I sold it. Recently, I sent my FTdx9000 Contest in under the Performance Enhancement Program and, once again, the work was done well, and the rig returned in perfect condition. I have been very pleased with Yaesu factor service.

0= NEEDS HELP Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
My 2nd ft 857d is on its way back to “yahoo” tech service. I sent the radio in with low output on 160 80 40 meters on lsb 3 days after I got the radio. 3 weeks later I get the radio back. Never fixed so with the help of a friend I did more testing… low output on all bands on lsb (20watts) and normal output on usb(50watts). ALC not working.

I talked to Tim F. who is extremely nice. This is the 2nd time the radio has been into the shop. I paid for the radio new on 6-15-09, it is now 7-16-09 and I am sending it in for the 2nd time. I hope I get to use it before the end of my warranty.
Repair, replace, or reimburse.
