Display delay Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I think I'm being fair with a 3. I sent this radio to Yaesu because the display would not come on for several seconds to several minutes. This does not happen every time it is turned on. Yes I'm got it back and still have the problem. I don't feel I should send it back at my expense for another failed attempt at repair.

I have two friends in the immediate are that have this radio and both are having the same problem. I have searched the internet and have not found any service bulletins or mods that address this problem. One addresses an open fuse in the inverter of the Mark V but nothing for the field. Of course if the fuse is open the display won't come on at all.

If anyone has a fix please let me know.

OH WELL!! Back to the work bench.

I've been very pleased Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I like my Yeasu 1000MP MKV Field, ( I used the Yaesu 920 previously) I purchased my 1000 used, but sincerely haven't had any real complaints with the Rig. Great operation in all modes and if there is anything I've noticed it is that sometimes - the Display is just a few seconds slower (seems to happen on colder mornings) in being as bright as it designed to be when I first turned it on. I use the Heil Classic Mic with the Rig and adjusted the settings exactly as Bob Heil had listed on their site, and I tell you from the first morning after installing the Mic I was asked what it is that I do with my Audio, with many many compliments on the sound. More over I found that spending time with the manual and understanding my settings, was my own weakest link...for there were many times I said "OooooH Now I see" I'd say a Great Rig for the money and I am Happy with it. 2 years later... Still the best!!! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've owned this FT1K MK5 field now for about 30 months. It's played well in normal ragchewing, contesting and dxing on all the bands. Overall it's probably racked up in excess of 10K QSO's on all modes.

I've installed 2.1KHz, 2.8KHz, 400Hz and 250Hz filters in both the 2nd and the 3rd IF's and upgraded the standard filtering in the 2nd RX to an INRAD 2.1KHz. It also has an INRAD roofing filter.

I decided I should update my earlier review because I've been toying with the idea of selling this rig to upgrade to an FT2000.

Then I downloaded and compared the published FT2000 specs. to those of the FT1000mpMK5 Field. I was pleasantly surprised.

Sensitivity... MK5 field slightly better...
Selectivity... -6dB... MK5field generally better
Selectivity... -60dB... FT2000 looks better
Image rejection... MK5 field better
TX Harmonic radiation... similar
SSB Carrier suppression... FT2000 better
Unwanted Sideband suppression... FT2000 better
3rd Order IMD... Equal but Field wins in Class A

There certainly does not seem to be much seperating these two rigs... so I've decided I'm going to stick with the Field for a while longer.

I'm still convinced that this rig represents one of the best value for money solutions available. The FT2000 is about 1K dollars more than the price of a fully-loaded FT1kmpField on the used market and I'm still not convinced the differences will justify the spend.

I hope I'm proven wrong.

Excellent Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This is my second FT1000. I prefer the layout to the older FT1000MP. Only subtle differences but they matter. Still finding things out about this rig, despite owning it since 2002. Probably like most hams I only use around 5% of its options. Never use the memories or the second RX. Not added the Inrad roofing filters, never found the need for them. I have added the extra Collins mechanical filters to great advantage. I like the tuning control and the lovely smooth action. I prefer a very slow action and the Field offers this with extremely fine resolution. I have no need for the auto tuning feature as it is always used with the Acom 2000A linear.

I am intrigued by the imminent launch of its replacement, the FT2000. But very surprised to read that the new radio only offers a stability of plus/minus 1 ppm. My Field came as standard with plus/minus 0.5 ppm which I upgraded to plus/minus 0.25 ppm with the optional TCXO6 hi stab unit. Surely the FT2000 should at least equal its predecessor, not be inferior. Maybe this is a misprint.

All in all, I love this rig. Because of a mid-life crisis (meaning boredom) I did toy with changing it for either the Kenwood TS2000 or the Icom 756 pro MK 3. After taking a look at these two, I am convinced the Yeasu is far superior. The Kenwood looked like a little toy and the Icom just seemed too delicate to be considered a serious contender as a base station. It just shows how clever marketing photos can be totally misleading.

Will I upgrade to the FT2000? Not unless I am convinced it is superior in all respects to my present rig. In any case, I would wait at least 12 months to allow Yeasu to iron out any wrinkles there may be in its first wave of products.

I have only had mine for under a week, but I thought I would offer a preliminary report with something more substantial later.

First of all, the display. I just cannot understand the criticisms of the display. It seems identical in brightness to the MP I had. Any brighter and it would likely cause eye strain. I use it in the Bright position in a shaded room (I dislike bright sunshine shining onto the radio, no matter how brightly lit the display might be). I wonder if some people have gotten used to television with its ultra bright display. Or are they suffering from some eye condition?

As you can gather, I believe the display is excellent. Easily read and very clear. By the way, I wear spectacles, so I certainly do not have perfect vision.

Now onto other matters. I really appreciate the larger controls for shift and width, but much more, I really appreciate Yaesu's IDBT. When I tuned around languidly on a display radio before purchase I was not convinced it made much, if any, difference. Not so. The difference is very noticeable under real conditions of heavy QRM. I was working a station under bad conditions and I was on the point of giving up, when I tried this feature. At first I used it a bit clumsily and it didn't seem to be much help (as in the shop). Then, magic! I really understood how to use it and the station literally popped into the clear. I was so astonished, I switched it off and nearly lost him again. This seems to have a spectacular effect at my QTH. I cannot guarantee how it works with different antennas and locations, etc.

I think the upgrade cost was worth it for this feature alone.

I have lots to learn about the set. Fortunately, the menu's seem broadly similar to my previous MP, so things are coming together quietly and within a few weeks I should have it set up to my liking.

Great (not so) little rig Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Several years ago I had FT-1000D's as my main rigs on the low bands. With the noise blanker and CW keying mods, plus the slow tuning rate kit, they were outstanding. Then came the crop of plastic MP's with an even worse CW click problem and I moved to IC756 Pro's and a K2. (and ranted to all who used the MP's to clean up their bloody keying)

A few months ago I had a chance to buy a new, in the box, late production Mk V Field locally here in Indonesia for a good price.

Long story short, a great performer on CW, RTTY, and occasionally on SSB. Not quite the RX of my Ten Tec Orion, but close. Not quite the RX of my K2, but very close. Many features, great ergonomics, and the keying problem has been patched in later production runs.

An Inrad roofing filter (not really necessary on 160m in this part of the world), a pair of Inrad 455kHz filters, along with the noise blanker mod and it is now one of the main radios I use both in RTTY contests and on Top Band.

Summary, good value for money, good 'all rounder'.

CU on 160
