Hard to beat for the money Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
Most comments concerning the rig have been made. I have owned many rigs and probably will continue to add new equipment from time to time. I can honestly say the Mk V Field has one of the best receivers I have ever used. My only complaint is that the NB could be better. I also feel that transmit audio is good, but IMHO a notch below some of my kenwood rigs. This rig is definitely a keeper for years to come. Despite having other rigs in the shack I reach more and more for the Mk V Field

Excellent radio at a great price! Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
This is a classical looking radio that looks great. The receiver is very sensitive and has excellent selectivity. The tx ssb audio sounds very nice. You can have a paddle/key connected to the back and another to the front.Has three antenna connections in the back, making it an excellent radio for 160 Meters. Most of the controls are in the front, large and easy to manipulate. Being able to listen to both VFO's at the same time is great for contest. The combination of digital filters and mechanical filters make it great for weak signal chasing. The synchronous detection is great for SWL. The competitor is a Cadillac but this radio is a Porche Carrera

Awesome Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Took it out of the box connected antenna and MD-100 and was on the air in less than ten minutes. Had the radio less than two weeks and it is a joy to operate. Reports are all positive. Sounds very nice, even the noise sounds good HI Have a lot to learn on this rig but it will be a fun process I think. Hope to have it for many years to come.

nice balance of old and new Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Could not possibly fit all of the capabilities of the radio here so here's a simple one.
I've had the radio for a few weeks. The reciever is very sharp and effective on QRM as well as qrn, adjust the ADJUSTABLE front end filter and most of the occasional lapse of static is gone!
Narrow filters help out on crowded band conditions, but, radio does fine with out them. Also picks up very well on the weak ones and does't distort easily on the strong ones.
I'm not a big CW fan... ,yet,....
Setting the rig up is a little time consuming. Until I mastered all the controls and menus I used the included cheat sheet.
Have recieved very good audio reports, but it takes a while, as there are seperate controls for transmit carrier point on ssb, 1 for usb ,AND, 1 for usb w/processing!, same goes for lsb. Am carrier is adjustable {there is no processor for am}, 4 internal EQs to choose, many different tx bandwidth options with or w/o dsp enhancement, plus if you get the md200 mic which is also adjustable, be prepared to spend some time just on tx audio.
Recieve audio is the same way, many adjustments. Basically what ever you can do to your tx audio, you can do to your rx audio, not including tailoring and shifting around the rx filters with the edsp...
I noticed that these are probably one of the best off the shelf AM rigs, ten-tec jupiter also did well on AM.
Again, I can't list all the features, and I haven't had the radio long enough for a reliability review, but, over all it performs very good and is very flexible. Definately a keeper.

;-)) Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought that radio about 2 weeks ago here in Germany. I have to use a radio much longer to write pros and contras but I want to write about my impressions I had until now:

1. Very best TX Audio !!!
Is there anybody who try to find a radio with
better Modulation ? Try that stunt...

2. Great RX ! Easy to read very weak Signals.
Not a problem with SHIFT and WIDTH knob to
cut of stations who come to close to my
Frequency. Great in combination with IDBT.

3. EDSP gives the radio higher value.
I dont want to miss the EDSP for TX and
n e v e r for batteling with QRM.

I am glad I bought that radio and you surely will be to when you buy one.

OUTSTANDING Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I had the fortune of my friend's Tony VK2KYM and Jay VK2SD coming down to Canberra and Tony decided to bring his mk-5 field radio for me to check out over 2 days. Having owned two mp's previously i was keen to really see if there was any improvements oner the mp mk1.In a nutshell the RX is superb for selectivity, nothing beats a mechanical filter and signals just fall off the sides as you tune off them. The DSP noise reduction and 4 bandpass filters really work as does the IF Shift and width controls. The menu was easy to navigate through and this rig is very user friendly. The TX audio with the supplied hand mike is Kenwood/Collins quality and the class A output is cream on the cake especially when driving a tetrode Amp like the Emtronics DX SERIES of Amplifiers. The quality of construction is excellent and the dispaly was easy to look at even after 4hours of dxing and ragchewing. The inbuilt tuner was able to tune well outside of the 3 to 1 quoted range however nothing beats a resonant antenna and if your antenna is over 3 to 1 forget the built in tuner and fix the antenna--this is good advice from Yaesu. The manual for this rig is extremely well written and is very thorough. A great deal of thought went in to writing it and Yaesu's explanation of using all the interference fighting tools and the use of ibdt was excellent. The rig runs reasonable cool even when in class A! The main VFO is silky smooth and this rig has a very classy feel to it which is only matched by its performance. The only little quirk i found was that the mic gain and processor controls seem to interact when using compression and i was not able to set the amount of compression i wanted without exceeding ALC so despite this i was able to set up great punchy audio, maybe i was missing something? The noise blanker works very well and through the menu has two different types of blanking available and i was able to remove ignition and powerline noise without denting the rx audio. A very capable noise blanker and yes it does need to be menu driven as it is just so versatile--Well engineered Yaesu. The IF hiss is present when no antenna is connected but even on 10m when the antenna is selected this hiss falls into the band noise but with the hidden menu the IF gain can be backed off if needed but i don't believe this is necessary. In summary Yaesu have raised the bar from the early mp mk-1 and for the going street price this radio is outstanding value for money for the performance and control you have over the radio.Yaesu engineers are to be congratulated for the brilliant design of this radio, its performance will set the standard for a long time to come. Now i have to get onto hro in California and order one.

Cheers from Chris VK5CC//VK1GG

Excellent Transceiver Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
For the money this rig is excellent!
This radio is a contester's dream rig and the audio from the receiver and transmit has no equal.
The radio is also of excellent quality in construction and reliability. I would recommend this radio to anyone who would like a radio that pulls in weak signals and filters out all the noise.
Buy one you won't be sorry!

good enough Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Have the Field now for abt 6 months, using it for CW only. Before the Field I had a TS870 with IF-DSP.
Both are good, but not excellent, rigs. Each one has its own unnecessary weaknesses.
I am disappointed abt the following:
- QSK using all the IF-filters (also the Collins 500Hz) is not good, without the Collins filter it is acceptable.
- DSP in de audio (after the AGC) and not in the IF is useless for CW. The TS870 and the ORION show how it has to be done.
- the NB in the IF can do miracles. For some weeks I had strong local QRM S9+ on 18MHz and after switching in the NB it was undetectable. But is works only on a quite band. Strong stations up to 10kHz up or down make the NB useless.
- RIT-control is playing unpredictable. It sometimes jumps up and down more than expected.
- the S-meter is useless for signals lower than S7.
- the timing of CW-keyer is a little bit strange. But after a while you get used to it.
- the sidetone volume can not be controlled on the frontpanel.
- display intensity is low at start, but after warming up abt 10 minutes it is oke.
- My first Field had a bad relay for switching the RX-antenna. Got an other Field for it.

Of course there are also good things to tell.
But those are already advertised. ;>)

Great rig Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Justed traded in my Yaesu 847 for the FT-1000 Field. The 847 was a crystal set compared to the FT -1000 Field -what a difference-had no filters in either rig but much sharper receiver in this one.

first class Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
The field is the best rig I had owned or used. The reciever is outstanding and the sub reciever makes a big difference. The rig does need the extra filters though...why do yaesu insist on producing such a high class rig and not populating it with the filters neede to do the job? - answers on a postcard please.
The menu was a bit offputting at first and the settings did take some some time to get right but once this is done this is one fantastic rig!

Good Work Yaesu.
