Great receiver but eats batteries Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This radio is a great wideband coverage portable. Sensitivity is superb. If you connect it to a large outdoor SW antenna it is not overloaded as easily as most other portables. It is nice that it has alphanumeric memories. On VHF and UHF it is terrific.

The big negative is horrible battery life. Icom did a terrible job on that issue. If you get one, make sure you use the highest capacity nickel metal hydride or nicad batteries you can find. It doesn't pay to use alkaline cells. You will be changing them too often.

If not for the short battery life, this rig would be a 5.

Nice Portable Scanner Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Bought this unit sight unseen from HRO at a fire sale price. 1000 memories and great LCD screen, plus decent selectivity (for the size of the radio). Works as well as my old Sangean tabletop on HF, but way more portable. Added an MFJ longranger 2m antenna instead of tiny (included) ducky; big improvement for marginal signals. I must agree with the gent who asked for up/down tuning buttons...knob turning gets tiring pretty quick. Complicated scanning functions, but worth learning to use. Oddly, the SSB will not function if you are using the radio connected to the battery charger; very garbled, but it works great on the batteries. Text display is excellent; allows enough characters to properly describe each mem. freq. Finally, a real full coverage rcvr. that is portable enough and sensitive enough to take along that will rival a much bigger radio. And did I mention how portable it was?

Great handheld! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought this to replace a Yaesu VR500, which I thought was pretty deaf on the HF bands. Let me tell you, I do NOT regret this decision one bit. I have been able to listen to HF amateur, as well as USAF GHFS on 11.175 with NO PROBLEM, using just the rubber antenna it came with. I enjoy listening to civil aeronautical frequencies, and this radio has not disappointed me yet. Excellent reception and sensitivity on the VHF and UHF bands as well. A proven winner in my book! Of course, the free software didn't hurt, either!
