Reliable and solid performer Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I purchased my VEC-884 around 10 or 15 years ago with the express purpose of using it on various boat anchor tube receivers around the shack. It proved very reliable at filtering out QRN and occasional splatter. The big surprise was when I added it to the audio output path on my FLEX 5000. The FLEX is legendary with its ability to sift signals out of the hash, and with the addition of the 884 those abilities were enhanced even more. One plus with the 884 is the audio AGC which is good for reducing volume blasts during static conditions often found on 75m in the springtime. If you happen to come across one it's a handy addition to your shack no matter the vintage of equipment you may currently own. Also read the manual. It's the only way to get maximum benefit from the various functions available.. 73 NS5F

It's an MFJ 764B, really. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Since mine is at this point the first review of the VEC-884 I recommend also taking a look at reviews of the MFJ-784B. The case may say VEC-884 on the front control panel but open it up and you will see an MFJ-784B board. This means all the positive things written about the 784B also apply to the VEC-884. In my use of the VEC I have found no support for the negative comments written about it's twin brother MFJ-784B. Also, I picked this VEC DSP up used for $100 and that's a deal not to be missed.

One reviewer gave the 784B a 1/5 rating, writing that it was a very poor unit because it took more time to twiddle the knobs than he liked. Not so. There is a Quick Start section for CW and SSB that will get you going as soon as you make the cable connections. To get more sophisticated use from the 884 requires patience enough to read the detailed sections in the user manual.

I work only CW with a Ten Tec Paragon and probably don't need this external AF DSP because the Paragon has a full complement of filters down to 250Hz and effective passband and bandpass tuning. But the VEC is fun to play with, the audio filtering works and the Noise Reduction control absolutely does work in reducing atmospheric noise.

I actually have no negative comments to make about the VEC-884/MFJ-784B but I gave it a Good and not a Great! rating because nothing made by man is perfect. (opinion)
