Good Overall Receiver Best Radio Panasonic has offfered. Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
When the radio was introduced in 1984, it was quite advanced for it's day. It has only 9 memory presets that store only the frequency. It is not double conversion on MW or LW and relies mostly on an internal loop antenna at these frequencies. Here is my experience on the GOOD:
Sensitivity Good on all bands. The filters for AM is 7kHz/3kHz. The audio on this radio is excellent. When hooked up to an Optimus external speaker, it is superb! The radio has an interesting zone search and scan modes. It is quite stable and good enough for SSB reception. It's easy to operate and quite portable when comapred to a Satelit 800. It also does not eat batteries as fast as the Satellit either. The digital display is a bright clear white and easily read. Has a nice S-meter. A pleasant radio to listen to for hours on end.
The BAD or Questionable:
No user selectable AGC. Slow AGC on USB/LSB. Fast in the AM mode.
ON SSB, display reads +1.5khz above on USB and -1.5kHz below on LSB of center frequency. Tuning dial with age develops backlash in some positions of the clock. This can vary frequency +/- 3 or +/-.3kHz depending on the tuning speed you are in until it mechanically settles down. Fortunately, this problem can be corrected with freq. lock switch on main panel. The knobs and push buttons are fairly small.
