Great For 33cm Ham Band Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I've owned a few of these models for many years now and have found them to work great for the 33cm ham amateur radio band (902-928 MHz). Although programming them can be a challenge for some who don't have the software and cables, once programmed, these are excellent radio's and are sturdier than anything the amateur manufacturers ever made.

Only problem I ran into when first learning to program this model (or any of the Jedi series portables) were all the uptight folks who were afraid to even say the name 'Motorola' over the air. These people made it very difficult to learn a damn thing about how to use these fine radio systems for amateur operation.

Once the people who were afraid of their own Motorola shadow were weeded out I found plenty others who were more than willing to assist me in learning to modify, program and otherwise operate these fine radio's in a legal, law abiding manner.

I have found all Motorola Jedi series portables to perform well for amateur use. These models include the MTX9000, MT2000, MTS2000 MTX838, JT1000 and HT1000. These are all considered Jedi series portables and all share the same outer case and basic chassis (with a few exceptions).

I personally own all these models and use them exclusively for amateur operations. One main reason I use them is, other than being highly reliable and inexpensive, they all use the same accessories. Batteries, chargers, speaker/mics, cary cases, etc. are all shared among these models. Batteries are about as cheap as they come with the largest capacity being 3,000 mah.

For reliable amateur radio operation there simply is nothing simpler yet more durable than a Motorola Jedi series portable.

Great for beginners Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I just bought one of these off a friend and I'm really happy with it. It's a solid radio with awesome performance. The MTX9000 really isn't a feature full radio but it's perfect for most 900MHz needs.
