Phase Capacitor issues Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I recently purchased 2 of these antennas for mobile installs and both antennas came in the mail with the top section broken in the center of the phase capacitor. There was no evidence of damage of either the shipping box or antenna. If you decide to purchase this antenna the part number when you contact Diamond is #40402. The part will cost $11 plus $4 shipping. I tried to get replacements under their manufactures warranty but they wanted me to mail the antennas to them to be “inspected” or mail them to the retailer and go through the process. I advised that the cost of shipping and time is more of a hassle then just buying replacement part as this project was on a time schedule. Lesson learned, will use Comet and other brand name antennas if I can avoid Diamond in the future. Poor customer service and they treat you like a scammer. Such a shame because I’ve never had any issues with their antennas in the past but this model needs to some serious QA.

Light Duty Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have had 2 of these antennas but in the pl-259 version. The performance is pretty good but both failed mechanically. I had them mounted on the Roo bar. When the first tip went missing I blamed vandals. I mounted a second antenna but noticed while driving the tip was moving about 3 or 4 inches on rough roads until one day the top 5 inches just disappeared, sheared off at the top coil, presumably due to metal fatigue. It looks like these antennas would be ok if mounted on a gutter or bonnet mount. Pitty as I quite like Diamond products.

One incredible antenna!! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I got this antenna last week, but only had a
chance to really give it a whirl last night.

And all I can say is "WOW!!!!"

Of course, the only antennas I have to compare it
to are an Austin Pentenna (an expensive piece of
crap) and a 1/4 wave ground plane antenna meant
for scanners but that transmits great a 2m and
70cm.

But still, the results, at least on 2m and 70cm,
are unreal. I was able to bring up repeaters on
distant mountains that I shouldn't be able to...
and doing it on 5 watts from my Icom T81A!!

I wasn't able to test on 23cm due to there being
only one (crappy) repeater and no activity.
There IS a repeater on a distant mountain with
some of those other machines I mentioned, but I
couldn't bring it up (which was expected).
What will be the ultimate test on this band is
how it performs under conditions where my other
23cm antennas have failed me when I travel down to
California where there IS 23cm activity! If the
stated gain figures are true, this should be
interesting...

I should also mention that while I was at HRO
looking at this thing, I put is side-by-side with
the equivalent Comet antenna. The gain figures
for this antenna are stated to be very slightly
better (not enough to worry about). What WAS
important, though, was that you could clearly
see that the Diamond was built quite a bit more
durably than the Comet was. It was for that
reason that I shelled out the extra $10 and got
the Diamond.

Finally, this antenna needs no ground plane, so
you can mount it anywhere. It think this may
also have at least a little to do with the
stellar performance. And for this reason as
well, it should make a great base station antenna!

Finally, the antenna has a tilt-down feature so
you can park your car in a parking garage. But
you'll still want to remove it for the car wash
as the antenna is highly vulnerable in this state.

If you have a radio that has these three bands,
such as the aforementioned Icom T81A, or one of
the many Kenwood mobile radios like the
TM-741/2 or TS-2000x, you should probably
seriously think of investing in this antenna for
your rig if you use it mobile. And since none of
the antenna makers manufacture a single-band 23cm
antenna, you may want to consider it (along with
a triplexer) for your single-band TM-541A, etc.
