Indestructible? I agree! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Bought a BP60 secondhand about 14 years ago. As it so happened, I already had the baseplate which I'd bought a few years earlier for another project. Due to other issues I didn't get around to putting the tower up for over 10 years during which time it sat in sections in the bottom of the garden. Finally got some concrete into the ground, the base fixed down and got the tower up using a car engine hoist to lift the sections into each other and the tower onto the baseplate. Despite the time in the grass the tower had no issues with corrosion thanks to the heavy galvanising. From the manufacturers plate on the tower it is about 35 years old but doesn't look it. Fitted 2 new winches and cables and all good as new. I chopped up a couple of plastic rubbish bins which slip over the winches to give them protection from the weather.

Indestructible Tower Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I own a BP40 (base plate, two sections, 40 ft) for about 25 years, which I got used from another HAM. He bought it in the 1970s or early 1980s from the german importer Kurt Fritzel, DJ2XH (sk). So my tower is certainly more than 40 plus years old now, but still in a condition that could be considered as good as new. The galvanizing is still perfect. And the tower has so far endured all heavy storms and the ruff Frisian climate without any complaints. The steel cables need regular greasing and the winches also need some care. Then nothing can happen.

If you are looking for a self supporting crank-up and tilt-over tower, the Versatower is your first choice. In Europe at least. Here in DL they are regularly offered used relatively cheap in HAM classifieds, where the version BP60SX (base plate, three sections, 60 ft) is the most common.

Strumech P60 tower Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Installed a P60 (3 section 60ft tower) in 1978 been in use continually.
Overhauled this year (2005) re-cabled, red leaded (painted) fitted new rotator (Yaesu G-1000C)recabled Jaybeam TB3 HF 20-15-10 Yagi with Ecoflex 10 cable.
27 years in service and now in A1 condition, can't be bad!
For UK hams Vine Antennas stock all replacement parts for these masts, and the advice from them is unstinting and the service first class.
