A classic radio. Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Purchased new way back in the early 80s (too far back to remember the exact date) this radio is still going strong. I left radio for about 15 years and dusted off my 830 in the last couple of months. The switches are a bit crackly but that’s not surprising. The 6146 valves/tubes are as strong as ever. On receive this rig is hard to beat. IF shift and notch filters can pull many a station out of the QRM.

Transmit audio is good but I have always felt the 830 needs a linear. The RX is just so good that 100W is not enough. I firmly believe a 400W boost would get the 830 really pulling in the DX.

If you can find this rig at a reasonable price then go for it. This is a solid rig where all the frills are real useful.

Great rig Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
No bells & whistles. Excellent RX. Very good TX audio (with MC-50 mic). Impressive Notch filter and very effective speech processor. A lot of "punch". Worth every penny.
