Gets the job done Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This was my first UHF rig, and the only radio that I have ever bought new. Got it from AES back in 1984 when they were closing them out. This was the UHF version of the HT1200, but was not an exact copy. Instead of using the LED readout, it had thumbwheel frequency selection, which eliminated the memories except for 446.000 simplex, which was a permanent call channel. This also prolonged battery life, though. Like the HT1200 and other Santecs, this was a big HT, about the size and shape of a brick. Still you got decent power out-3 watts, 1 watt, and 50 mw, and it was surprising what you could do with 50 mw.

Finding tone encoders for this HT are very difficult, so it wouldn't be a good choice if you needed PL to get into your favorite machine. Some of the accessories are also getting more difficult to find.

The pluses of this HT are that it performs very well, is rugged and industructable, and alot of fun if you only have a couple of repeaters locally. I never see these for sale also. I did once find one at a hamfest, and picked it up, but I never seem them on eham or ebay. If you find one for a good price get it, I probably will.
