I own 3 repeaters - all GE Mastr II. Each one has a 1000VA Sola Constant Voltage Transformer on the AC line. In over 20 years of operation NONE of these repeaters has been knocked off the air from lightning or spikes via the AC line. Each of these repeaters shares a location with other commercial repeaters that get zapped with too much regularity. I feel the Sola transformers are what protects my repeaters.

My older tube radios operate superior to radios directly connected to 120vac mains. The transformer provides a stabile B+ voltage including the fussy tube filament voltages. Using a Sola transformer will remove the varying line voltage creating a much improved frequency stabile transmitter & receiver. I buy these on the surplus market for as low as $10 for 250VA. My older Heathkit Commanche & Cheyenne Twins use a 250va unit resulting in stabile operation on 10 meters. The tube filaments now have regulated voltage, a function a 0A2 regulator tube can not provide. I recommend Sola and keep the transformer in a well ventilated area as they operate hot by design or called 'saturated' core.
A transformer will not increase the output voltage once the laminations are fully saturated. Sola is a simple design without fussy electronics subject to failure. Additionally, they provide clean power. The harmonic neutralized type units are best.
