Exceeded expectations Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Sent my 2 1/2 year old IC-746PRO (out of warranty) in to Icom Bellevue for unstable RF output on 2 meters. They had it for two weeks, fixed it and added other mods since its manufacture....no charge. They sent e-mails confirming receipt and shipping with tracking info. Very efficient and satisfactory service.

Finals burned out on my IC-V8000. Rig was out of warranty. This was the second time in five months this had happened, and second time sending it to Icom America in Belleview, WA. First repair cost about $80 to repair.

This time their lead Technician Chris called to ask about the rig's symptoms. When I mentioned that this same problem had happened in March, 2005, he said that he would cut the repair bill in half. When the rig arrived (2.5 week turnaround), Icom had charged me zero for the repair and zero shipping - repaired for free! Its performing better than ever. Way to win back a customer Icom.

Thumbs Up! Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Recently had a lightning strike at this location. I lost the CI-V port on the ProIII. Sent the radio to ICOM Repair in Bellevue, Washington. I sent it on the 8th of Aug, received it back on the 25th. They repaired the unit under warranty even though a lightning strike isn't usually covered by the warranty. They also shipped it back to me,in NY, Next Day Air, via DHL. I expected it to be shipped back to me via ground. Nice surprise! So to the folks at Icom America Repair...THUMBS UP!!!!
Thanks.....

Never again Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Need I say anything, other than the repair service, which Icom America offers, is a joke. I have been there two times with two different radios and both times they have completely missed the mark and I have had to bring it back for a second repair.
These guys are supposedly trained electronic technician (professionals--HaHa), who repair the equipment. You would think that they would let the equipment run for a while and check it out on ALL bands. I brought my 735 in for service, because one evening it went completely quiet. Since I live in Seattle I figured that I would just send it over across the lake to Icom America, since I work during the day. When it was ready (guesswork), they called me. I took time off from work and drove over there and pickup up the rig. I went to plug it in and after about 30 minutes, 80 and 40 went dead. Nothing could be heard.
Next time, I will send it to a private shop and never again will I have Icom America touch my equipment.
I will give them 1/5 for effort.

Service OK, QC in Question Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This review covers 3 Icom products.

Sent my R-10 in under warranty because the freq calibration was way off when new [Actually the first one I returned to the dealer. Then when I received another that was 'off', realized that they were all probably poorly calibrated]. Returned from Icom in about two weeks with much better calibration.

Sent my 756PROII in [out of warranty] because of distorted audio. Turn around time 4 weeks. They didn't find anything wrong with the audio [suggested it was RF in the shack which is very possible] but did find that the bias was WAAAYY out of adjustment. Should have been 100 ma., was 500 ma. They charged 1/2 hour labor to adjust, which I thought was fair.

Sent my V8000 [out of warranty] in because it would not xmit at 75 watts. The Automatic Power Control thought it was transmitting into a bad load . . . and reduced power. Even into a 50 ohm dummy load. I had only occasionally used the rig and only at the lowest power . . . so I never realized it had a problem at 75 watts. Turn around time was 2 1/2 weeks, the bill was 1/2 hour labor, which again I thought was fair. The repair description: "Realigned power out program settings".

My only question about all this is the factory's QC. All three of my 'issues' were QC related . . . not a failure of a component.

I'm still an Icom fan but will check any more purchases thoroughly before the warranty is up.

Good work Time Owned: more than 12 months.
Icom fixed my 756ProII which had received a large static hit though the antenna input. Shipping to the far NW is expensive and slow but that's a UPS problem. The PROII was 3 weeks out of warranty yet ICOM honored it anyway plus they had it back to me within 3 weeks. Considering the shipping time, this is amazing.

Repair work well done Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Around 14 months after purchase, my Icom R8500 receiver developed a problem: the HF front end (0.1 - 30 MHz) lost almost all receive sensitivity. WWV at 10 MHz was unreceivable most of the time. The (parallel) VHF/UHF front end in the R8500continued to perform well. The receiver normally carries a 12 month warranty.

After first contacting Icom, I shipped the receiver (with a detailed cover letter) up to the Icom Repair Station in Bellevue, WA. Twenty-six days later it arrived back at my home, repaired and fully operational again. During the interval I phoned the service department once, and they confirmed that they had the receiver and provided an approximate date on which they would begin work on it. They made no attempt of their own to contact me, however.

The returned shipment contained a detailed invoice, indicating that the repair department had found a burned-out component in the HF front end, replaced it, and then tested the receiver for specifications compliance across the entire operating range. Of particular interest, Icom had on its own initiative extended the terms of the warranty and made no charge for the repair. They also paid the return shipping.

Granted that my experience is probably not representative of everyone else: the R-8500 is much more than a $150 handheld transceiver, and the problem was specific and easily detectable. But I believe that Icom did everything possible to make the repair, did it well (although I have not yet opened the receiver to look at the quality of the board work), and behaved with (what is, regrettably, today) rare professionalism. I would have complete confidence in sending them future repair work.

Although it is not worth lowering their rating below a 5.0, my only regret is that Icom did not notify me in advance that they were shipping the receiver. It arrived completely unexpectedly, and it was only through good fortune that we were at home when the UPS driver rang the doorbell. Icom had my contact information, and an e-mailed shipment notification would have been appropriate.

Such good performance in the repair department can have very positive ramifications later on the sales floor.

Quick turn around Time Owned: more than 12 months.
My 18 month old 706mkllg had a vswr problem. In fact all metering was bogus. I went to the Icom site, downloaded their repair form and sent it in with the radio. I got it back in 23 days working perfectly. I felt that the cost was reasonable as well.
