GOOD ROTOR Time Owned: more than 12 months.
The HAMIV is the "standard" against which most other rotors are compared. It evolved from the old "HAM M" rotor. If you have really really BIG antennas, you need a bigger rotor than this, And you can get "cheaper" rotors (Which are just that, much less quality) For average amateur use, this series of rotors are still the one to have. I have a HAMII that has been up since the early 1970's with no problems, and a HAMIV up for about 6 years now, no problems with it either. My rotors are old, and use the terminal strip to connect the wires. A big improvment would be the aftermarket kits to switch to a plug in cable.

Good rotors Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have an old Ham M, I think this was the forerunner of the Ham IV. I got this one for 125 bucks on e-bay. It's in a Rohn 25G tower at 72' turning an A4S. I cleaned it up and greased it before installing and it works like a new one.

It saved me considerable money over the price of a new one. If you see a used one that works, buy it!

Giving Up Problems Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I have used my Ham IV since 1987. It is an 'OK' rotor but not worth its last selling price. The few occuring problems have been Brake Sticking, Cold weather 'won't go', and the overall poor design of the electrical interface at the rotor of which I have to climb up and clean, reconnect, etc, the control cable to the terminal strip. Now it's broke. From what I have learned the gear set/motor appears to have been a problem. Don't get me wrong; it worked for 13 years before giving up the ghost; just required a lot of tender loving care.

Going to HRO today to buy a Yaesu rotor, quite a few folks up here in the Northeast seem to swear by them. MFJ suppy parts or new Ham series????? Yeh.

20 years, still going Time Owned: unknown months.
Still going after 20+ years turning 14 square feet of antenna, good value. Has the same motor as the "bigger" TailTwister. Have it mounted inside the tower "floating" with a thrust bearing taking up all of the vertical load. I credit this mounting with the rotor's longevity as there is no bearing or potentiometer wear caused by mis-alignment under load. Don't know what will happen to the quality of this line of rotors now that it has been sold, but I would definitely buy another one used if it was working well when taken out of service, often see them around for $100-$150.
