Review Summary For : The Complete DXer by W9KNI, 3rd Edition
Reviews: 43MSRP: $19.95
Description:
One of the most popular DX book ever written, "The Complete DX'er" is both the highly entertaining diary of a serious DX chaser, and at the same time full of lessons for DX'ing success. Written in a warm, personal style, this is a work you will read again and again. It very much respects and honors the traditions of DX'ing, yet brings a sense of excitement to the chase. The new 3rd edition has been revised to take into account the realities of DX'ing in the 21st century.

The third edition is a revision of the second edition, and a very good one at that. I enjoyed reading this book a second time - and it was interesting to see Bob's comments on the latest and greatest techniques, including the use of spotting clusters.

Still the best book on DX out there in print.

Simply the best. Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The 2nd Ed. of this book is what got me interested in DX'ing. It was back in the days of Novice Enhancement and I had begun to play around on 10M SSB and was working towards the higher license classes. I had begun to dimly percieve there was something other than 2M FM.

Bob's writing style had me hooked from the start. The feeling of sitting next to him, reading how he was thinking about cracking the pileup and working the DX was what drew me in. Some of the technical details were a bit foreign but I got more out of the admonition to "listen to EVERY signal" than anything else I ever read on the subject.

Along the way Bob gave me more than the how - he also gave the why in many cases. He taught me, for instance, to spot the DX only after it is in the log (he was talking about 2M FM DX spotting, but the principle remains the same on DX Clusters.) He taught me why one shouldn't tail-end, and what the chances those sending UP UP UP have of ever actually WORKING the DX station.

The 2nd Ed. opened up the whole of DX'ing to me. I lent it out years ago and never got it back. I've bought a few DX books since, and found none of them as good as this one.

I've looked for a used copy at flea markets and hamfests since, but never saw a single one.

Most of the reviews of the earlier editions say things like "the best book on DX'ing ever written." It is the simple truth. When I read of the new edition, I bought it the next day.

Yes, it is autographed. No, you can't borrow it. Go out and buy it. Today. If you love DX, or even think you might learn to love DX, go buy it.

Updated and Excellent! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
The latest 3rd edition of this book was introduced at Dayton this year. I picked up a copy there and couldn’t wait to get home to read the latest.

A lot has changed in DXing since the first edition was published 20 years ago and the second edition 14 years ago. Bob, W9KNI incorporates the latest and greatest technological advances and techniques into the new book. For example, he discusses things like how to effectively utilize the DX Cluster and how to beat the instant pileup caused by a cluster spot of a rare one.

A lot has also stayed the same since the earlier editions of this book were published. In the latest edition the author preserves the play-by-play style of teaching by examples that will have your heart pounding with the excitement of the chase. W9KNI has been there and he knows what he is talking. This book is well written and is a very enjoyable read. It will provide a foundation for the neophyte DXer as well as providing some very beneficial tips for the seasoned DXer.

It is great to see this excellent book back in print. It’s well worth the $19.95.

PS: If you order off the web site Bob will autograph the book for you on request.
