Outstanding Course |
Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. |
I used this course to pass all three exams at one month intervals. Very impressed by the layout and algorithms that repeat the weak areas or incorrect answers. I found that many shorter sessions worked well for me rather than the recommended 1 hour (YMMV). For Tech, I did stick a piece of paper up on the wall with some of the numbers I was having trouble remembering (MPE, PEP, Bandwidth by mode, Repeater Offset) and would recite them to myself like a mantra. For the later exams I found that was no longer necessary. I think the repetition sharpens your recall.
Thanks to this course I was able to get 100% on all three exams! |

Great path to pass exams |
Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. |
I signed up for the Hamtestonline course in August 2021. I passed the Technician exam in September 2021, the General exam in October 2021, and the Extra in November 2021.
I have no amateur radio or electrical background. Using the "study" option in the course was my primary mode of study.
The results speak for themselves.

Great Test Prep |
Time Owned: more than 12 months. |
I struggled with the ARRL prep manual for the Technician exam and my XYL said HamTestOnline made the difference for her so I tried it. 2 weeks of an hour a day got me through. 18 months later I was offered a chance to sit for the General and 2 weeks, an hour a day, using HamTestOnline without a study manual got me through. 4 months later another test session was offered so I didn’t use a study manual but did HTO about 30 minutes a day for 4 weeks then an hour a day for 2 weeks and passed the Extra. I am 67 years old and have no prior experience with amateur radio, or electronics or physics in high school or college. Can’t claim to have retained much or really understanding the theory behind the material, but since my objective was passing the exams, this worked great for me. Now I am on the air and will learn the material at my own pace when time permits, from the 3 study guides that still look brand new. |

Super Test Prep Course! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I discovered HamTestOnline after looking at several other options to obtain my Technician license. After trying YT video instruction, question bank-type apps, books and audiobooks, HTO worked best for how I learn.
I took my Tech exam 5 weeks after starting and not only got 100%, but was the first one done in the room of about 15 test-takers. It should only take about 1-3 weeks to prepare for the Technician (10-15 study hours, depending on how fast a learner you are.) The answers just popped out at me due to how well the study material is written (very concise) and the frequency with which the questions are presented.
HTO gives 4 multiple choice answers. Sometimes the answer is "All of the above" so be careful not to just jump on the first correct answer. You have the option to answer the question, see the reference text, or "Show Answer."
I recommend staying in Study Mode and refer to the Study Tips link. I just finished the General course and am awaiting my test date. I just bought the Extra course and look forward to studying for that. I should mention that I also took the General test right after I got my passing score on the Technician and got 19 out of 35 correct, just using common sense, not having studied for yet.
To be honest, I'm taking these Ham tests to try to stay sharp as a senior (almost 70) and to try my hand at CW, QRP and SOTA/POTA when I finally get my station set up. I am really interested in CW and am also studying at 20 wpm to regain CW fluency. For now I'm trying to learn 2 meter repeater mode after buying a Kenwood handy talkie. So much has changed since 1976, when I first got into ham radio, but HTO is a great way to do well on those ham tests and a fun way to learn along the way. HTO makes learning "addicting!" |

Zero to Extra in One Session |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
Started with HamTestOnline one month before my intended exam date. I began with the intention of taking all three exams in one session.
The interface is clean, clear and simple, both on a computer (Mac, via Safari) and an iPad. Very easy to use, and all of the features are well presented.
I spent the vast majority of my time in "Study" mode.
This presents the basic material ahead of the immediately related questions. Over time, it stops presenting the tutorial texts, and focuses on the questions. However, you can always see the tutorial information, or formulas (and solutions) if you wish - just by clicking the appropriate button.
The tutorial information/texts are clear, concise and easy to follow. They are presented in a more logical order than some of the available printed manuals. The extra information (via external links) was appropriate and useful, but not necessary (I didn't read all of it).
For a good number of areas, HTO gives hints, tricks and so on to help you remember the correct answers and/or reduce the number of possible answers. This helped in a number of areas, which was very welcome as some of graph and formulaic elements in the Extra exam have VERY similar answers for right/wrong.
I spent a total of 51 hours studying, with just 2 practice exams (mostly out of interest). I averaged just over an hour a day for 31 days, with the low-side being 30 minutes and the longest (on "exam week") being 4 hours.
The "spaced repetition" works extremely well. The questions you are weak on, or need to review, come up with an uncanny frequency of matching when you start thinking about them. And weak/review questions are tracked, so that you can either revisit them organically (based on your repetition setting) or use the "View Courses" function to drill those questions specifically.
A "User Rank" is maintained, which is how your scores rate against other users of HTO, this is useful/fun in a couple of ways. One, it's another way to see how you are improving. Two, it provides a little simulated "stress", when you're getting good scores and miss a question you thought you knew (which drops your rank).
For the first three weeks, I studied for a single exam at a time. Once I got to the high-90% range, I turned that exam off, and move to the next one. I did Tech, General, back to Tech, then to Extra, and then started mixing them up.
In the last week, I was running through the entire question pool, for one exam at a time every day. The last couple of days I did the entire question pool for ALL exams, including on "Test Day".
When it came to actual exam, I felt extremely well prepared, and wound up scoring 100% on Tech, 97% on General and 100% on Extra. The question I missed on General, I misread.
This was a very useful, enjoyable, and quick way to cover a lot of material. It worked well. The results were excellent. Couldn't be happier with it. It's something I would definitely recommend to anyone considering becoming a ham. |

Extra Class Upgrade @ 100% |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
This online tool is the BEST way to study, learn and retain what you need to know for the Extra Class Exam! Following the study guide through all 10 Elements of the Extra Class test, the materials presented to aid in learning about each subject were spot on. Then the relevant questions presented immediately following, along with the quizes which take you back again thru prior topics, really helps to burn answers into memory. And at any time on any question you can opt to jump back to the text to help clarify on questions you may have answered incorrectly.
Be prepeared to invest the time and you are on your way! Two to three weeks is a reasonable timeframe.
I received a 100% passing score and would highly recommend Ham Test Online! |

Passed!! |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
Picked this and studied for about a week and pretty much sailed though my general. I found the blend of lessons and quizzes to be more effective than some of the apps I tried for my tech license. I would recommend this as an excellent study series for those looking to advance. Learning is a highly individualized thing, but this really worked for me. |

Zero to Extra in 2 test sessions!!! |
Time Owned: 3 to 6 months. |
I found this study platform to be perfect for my style of learning.
Their system reminds me of the old school method of using flash cards with your classmates in college.
The ability to gauge your progress by taking an occasional practice test was very helpful. This gave me good input as to my level of preparedness for the upcoming exams.
I was able to meter the volume of time spent on each subject of study.
Most people understand their strengths and weaknesses and this system allows you to manage which subjects to spend more time on.
I had previously used another app that was free and never felt it was sufficient, that is why I went looking for something better.
Lastly, the fact that there was a cost associated with the practice material gave me added motivation to study properly and pass the tests on the first go.
Anytime you have skin in the game, the game is more serious!

Good material |
Time Owned: 0 to 3 months. |
I just had major back surgery and have about a 6 month recovery time. I told myself that when I recovered I would have my extra class license and learn something about d star. Two week and 3 to 4 hours a day of serious study and I got my extra. I still know nothing about dstar. The hamtest online material was good, I have a weak math background and no nothing of digital. The course got me thru that just fine. |
