solved the cookoo problem Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Went into the menu & got rid of that darn cookoo sound when scanning. Display is a little small compared to my Icom 208 & the buttons on the mic are a little small but I really like the dual receive On one side I put my repeater freqs & the other is for police scanner. I like the alphanumerics so I don't have to memorize the frequencies, just look at the name of the town. Overall, I am very happy with it.

Its a good sounding rig & it was easy to program but man, it sounds like a cookoo clock on scan when it receives something! I guess it takes some getting used to that cookoo. For now its driving me nuts.

sweet radio!!! :-) Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I bought the 8800 as my second radio (my third in my mobile however) and after i read the book about it it works pretty decent. However, I will say this, it is NOT for a beginning ham! Its far to complicated of a radio for a first timer to use as a first rig but after one reads the man. usung the rig is a snap.
The only gripe i have is the tiny little butons on the front and the low power of only 50 watts 2 meter and 35 70 Cm.. Oh well, I can live with it. Its that im used to my bold 75 watts I get out of my Icom V-8000. I have had pretty decent reports on 2 meters with the radio but i have not been able to find anyone on 70 to get any reports from. I bought my 8800 from Comdac at the Marshall, Mi hamfest last week and i do not regret getting the radio althouygh at the time i wanted the 7800 but Comdac didnt have any left! Argh! So i spent a few more $$$$ bills and got the 8800.
Overall i recommend the 8800 if one wants a good reliable small dual band rig.

Just got one Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
Excellent Radio. My fan stopped working. Seems the fan blade assy moved down the motor shaft and was rubbing on the motor. Moved blade assy. ok now. If the radio assy is installed under a seat or in the trunk, you should check the fan once an while. The keys on the contol assy should be backlit and the P1 - P4 mic buttons should also be backlit.

Don't think of the FT-8800 as a dual band radio. Think of it as two VHF/UHF radios in one box. The left side can be programmed totally different than the right side. There are no sub bands like traditional dual band rigs. What ever is programmed on the left is only available on the left, likewise for the right. I have mine programmed the same on both sides, so I can select any two frequencies to monitor, regardless of band.

As for as the radio is concerned ... volume and squelch knobs are weak, audio on UHF (both sides) is low and UHF is less resistive to intermod than VHF. AM aircraft receive works well.

Good but lack some of FT3000m features Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
Hi. Well it's almost a year now since i got my 2nd ft8800r (1st one came factory broken. I use it as my base 2m/70cm trx. What can i say. Works great. Quite resistant to QRMs. I live almost in the city center and even on 70cm number of QRMs is acceptable. Nice clear setup functions. Functional keys.No problems noticed as so far. Power on 70cm could be higher.
Xband works great, no problems noticed (similar to ft8900's).Good sensibility for weak signals. What in my opinion Yeasu did wrong is lack of functions which i loved in my old ft3000m
1. remote control via air + dtmf
2. cw id on xband - a must have function (legal matters)
3. a bit to "silent" modulation

Oh and one more thing.. i hate that god damn Signal meter, just can't figure out the right report i otta give.

Excellent dual-band rig Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
I have had my FT-880R for about a week, and am very pleased. I did some research and narrowed my final decision to the FT-7800 or the FT-8800R. The extra features in the FT-8800R were the final deciding factor.
I have been using it both base and mobile, and have had no problems. I am an ICOM fan, but decided on the FT-8800R based on lab test results, user feedback, and my positive experience with a VX-5R that I recently bought. The FT-8800R learning curve was not bad at all.

RE:Power off Time Owned: 6 to 12 months.
I have been using my FT-8800R every day, in all modes, and at all power levels with no problems.

I'm suspecting that the problem that was mentioned with the radio powering off when transmitting at high power is due to inadequate supply voltage -- the radio is going to draw around 9 amps at this power level, and chances are that you are getting power loss due to insufficient battery voltage/current, or too small of a powerline gauge causing a voltage drop from the battery, or both.

My unit is mounted in the trunk area, and I'm using about 15 feet of 6 AWG stranded cable to feed it via a Powerstream DC-DC voltage regulator. Have had no problems with this unit transmitting at high power with the engine off, but I cannot do the same with my 100W Icom-706M2G/High-Sierra antenna. I must have alternate power or have the engine running, or this radio will shut off during transmit.

Not happy at all Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
This radio has a serious flaw. It powers itself off while transmitting on High power on 2M. Nothing like keying the mic. and watching the radio go black. I've changed antennas, repositioned stuff, made sure it had ample air space for cooling, nothing helped. Put the rig on high power, keyup and poof! I'm off the air.
Anybody else had this problem? I've owned this radio less than a week.

No Intermod! Time Owned: 0 to 3 months.
All:
The receiver stands up quite well when traversing our locally known "intermod alley" of mid-town Anchorage, Alaska. All of my ninties-era Icoms just couldn't handle signals (intermod) in the Anchorage area without the filtering help of a DCI bandpass filter. My older IC-28H does handles signals well, though.

Other than my fingers getting in the way of seeing the display when I program the rig, I love it.

I am quite glan I listened to the other reviewers here. Cudos to Yaesu! 73 from the "frozen chosen" in Alaska.
