A handy gadget, but not great... Time Owned: more than 12 months.
This critter showed up at a hamfest and found it's way into my shack. It's a handy little battery operated box with a small whip antenna poking out of the top of it.

Used as an active antenna, it's useful if you don't have any better antennas for HF reception, but don't expect anywhere near the level of performance you'd get from a good antenna system.

I mainly use it on my workbench as a quick way of checking out receivers.

One feature I like about it; in addition to being powered by the ubiquitous "wall wart" type of transformer power supply, it also has an internal battery. In portable, temporary receiving setups, it's nice to not have to hunt up another power outlet to run this little beast!

When used as a preselector / preamplifier for a more elaborate antenna system, it does a competent job of reducing adjacent channel overload on HF, and generally imporving the noise figure of marginal receivers.

My main complaint with this little beastie...

I like DXing on long wave. The calibrations on the tuning dial go down to 290 KHz, but in reality it doesn't go that low; in fact, ALL calibration of the bottom band is atrocious. Further, it seems like the noise figure isn't all it should be down there.

If you can find one of these cheap (like I did), it could be a useful gadget to have around.
